New Nexus 7 Help (2nd Gen) / Display questions
« on: December 19, 2013, 01:46:22 AM »
I'm making some progress up the steep learning curve, but have some questions related to the display.

- When I go back to the centre home screen I see My Library, with the covers of some of the books I have read and music I have listened to. I think this looks ugly; I'd much rather have a clean screen with the apps and widgets only. How do I turn the My Library display off?

- Every now and then, for no reason I can see, a little window pops up and asks me if I want new wallpaper, and gives me options. I don't want new wallpaper - at least not until I know what I'm doing. How do I stop this happening?

- On the first screen after I swipe left there are some RECOMMENDED FOR YOU icons. I don't want them, and don't want them to take up screen space. How do I get rid of them, and stop  new ones coming back?

- One of the  widgets I use the most gave me a fright today by disappearing off the home screen. I found it again by pressing the circle with dots in it and saw the widget on the apps and widgets screen. How do I get it back to the home screen? Pressing on it opens it, and trying to slide it while pressing it just copied it to the screen to the right of the home screen. I don't want it there either. Can I delete it and still keep the copy on the Apps and widget screen?

As you can see I have a long way to go, so expect more questions. Is there a good dead tree book I can read to help me blunder around less? I have Chris Herley's 'Google Nexus 7' no fluff guide, but it may be a bit too advanced for me.

Regards, Alex

New Nexus 7 Audio/Video Help (2nd Gen) / How do I listen to music?
« on: December 11, 2013, 11:06:20 PM »
I've just downloaded the first song on to my Nexus 7, and have got the receipt from Google. But I'm afraid I haven't the slightest idea how to listen to it.

I tried using the Play Music app, but all I got was advertising to try to get me to  use other apps.

Regards, Alex

PS - is there a way to automatically add my signature?

New Nexus 7 Help (2nd Gen) / Not yet a beginner questions for Nexus 7
« on: December 05, 2013, 10:21:11 PM »
I don't even have a Nexus 7 yet, but I expect to get one in 19 days and would like to get ready.  This is my first post on the forum, so forgive me if I've put it in the wrong place.

I expect to be using ebooks and music (mp3 files) that I already have, rather than buy from Google Play, but wonder how I can side load them, and whether what app I use will be able to read or hear them .

On an iPad2 if I want to see how one of the ebooks I have designed looks in iPad, Bluefire, and Marvin I have to load the ebook three times, once through each app. So far as I know once it's in the iBooks 'folder' there is no way to get to that ebook with one of the other apps without loading it through that app - in which case I have three copies of the same ebook on my iPad2.

Is it the same with a Nexus 7? If I want to check how an ebook looks on the Sony Android reader and with Moon+ and with the native Google ereader, and so on, will I have to load them through each individual reader? Or is there a way of loading an ebook into one 'folder' and then accessing that one ebook  with any of the ereader apps I have on the Nexus?

Will I be able to set up folders myself on the Nexus? If so, how do I do that?

How does one side load ones own ebooks to a Nexus anyway?

Thanks in advance for any advice, or pointers to where I can get the information. I'll probably have more questions still, so thanks in advance for your patience.

I don't own a Nexus yet but confidently expect my wife to buy me one for Christmas, and hope to prepare myself by asking questions on the forum.

My main hobby is designing ebooks, and one of the reasons for getting a Nexus is to be able to test the ebooks on a tablet.

Another hobby is listening to music, and I hope to learn how to side load some of the hundreds of CDs I have so as to be able to listen to them on the Nexus.

For reasons good or bad I hope to be able to avoid GMail since I value my privacy, so I'll be asking questions about using my current email account.

And I'm sure I'll find other questions to ask, and (I hope) be able to answer.

Regards, Alex
