Nexus 7 Audio/Video / talk talk sounds

How do i turn off annoying sounds when having  a chat conversation via text ?
The sound when the other person has sent a message. Really annoying to keep hearing it " pinging" each time.

Hi just got my nexus 7 and wondered if anyone can tell me if i can disable the touch tones when typing on gmail ? ive tried turning the sound down but it makes no difference. Just gets a bit annoying . Thanks
