Nexus 7 Apps / Next Issue
« on: August 11, 2012, 04:51:28 AM »
I've been trying to install Next Issue so I can view magazines I already subscribe to, Time and Entertainment Weekly, on the N7 with no success. Got a response from their tech that Jelly Bean support is "coming soon." Has anybody here used Next Issue? Its ratings aren't very high.

Nexus 7 Help / Re: Re: Netflix
« on: August 07, 2012, 12:20:15 AM »
Well I can say I haven't watched Netflix on it yet, just movies from Google play. Compare the Netflix app volume to the transformers movie that came on the tablet. It may be a Netflix volume issue and not a hardware thing because I've been very impressed with the speaker.
You're right, it's a Netflix app issue; it's not as loud as other apps. Still, I wish the speaker(s) faced forward.

Nexus 7 General Discussion / Re: GPS W/O WIFI?

Have you experienced any lock-ups or issues with NavFree USA?

I tried NavFree USA, and had some issues.  I would get to the point of enter the cross street or house number - and either as I was entering it - or just after it was entered, NavFree USA would always shut down and take me back to the home screen.

I haven't used it that much but don't recall any such lockups. I'll be giving a good test again in a couple weeks.

Sounds like yours is defective.

As for Flash, blame Adobe, not Google.

re: erik

With Navfree I experienced none of those limitations. Setting a brand new destination was my only problem.

The speakers aren't very loud, especially with the Netflix app and they face away from me, so they're hard to hear. This is worse if the dialog is subdued in the video I'm watching. Often I'll find myself putting my palm behind the speaker(s) trying to reflect the sound back toward me.  :(  But I guess that's what earbuds are for.

I've been using Netflix on my Nexus 7 almost daily and it works very well. Unfortunately, the rear speakers are kinda hard to hear so I use earbuds.

Nexus 7 Google Play Account Discussions / Re: no $25.00 credit
« on: August 04, 2012, 07:12:49 AM »
As fxsarge says, it's the method of payment that is the key. When making the purchase, choose Google Play Credit, not credit card. If your credit doesn't exist (yet) don't proceed with the purchase until you find out why the $25 credit isn't there.

I suspect the extra dollar charged was merely an authorization that will come back off your bill in a few days.

Just to clarify, you can get turn by turn directions offline but you need to set it up online. For instance, I went on a trip recently. When and if I needed to change destinations, I had to pull into a MacDonalds or some other free wifi hotspot to do that. Otherwise, my turn by turn directions worked just fine.

It's not exactly ideal, but works well if your trip is long.

I wish the speakers faced forward. Otherwise, I think they're fine.

Nexus 7 Vs. The Competition / Re: Nexus 7 vs Ipad 3: Complete List
« on: July 30, 2012, 07:29:41 AM »
First, let me say I am not an iPad fan (yet) and I own a Nexus 7.

Your lists are very subjective. It really depends on what you want to do with your device, where and how. The iPad does have GPS. You can do web browsing on the Nexus 7. I don't know why some of the items ended up on one list but not the other.

But thanks.

I've enjoyed Flipboard and Pulse; both for news.

Nexus 7 General Discussion / Re: (godawful) home screens & widgets
« on: July 26, 2012, 10:21:09 PM »
When I tap the home button it takes me to the home page with all my chosen apps. All that other stuff — books, movies and magazines — is on other pages so it doesn't bother me. It's kinda nice to have it there should I need it. I'm not sure I understand what the problem is.

For example, when you hold your smart phone, are your fingers in front of the screen, or on the edge?

Smaller, lighter, cheaper?

Nexus 7 is a nice tablet but I hope tablets five years from now will have edge to edge screens, weigh less and cost less than today.

Lighter?! Smaller?! Seriously? One of the markets that they were going for was ebook readers, if they made it any smaller then it would make it harder to read (for a lot of people). There's also a reason why they didn't design the N7's screen to go edge to edge, again it was to cater to ebook readers, when the screen goes to the edges, the thumb/fingers get in the way while holding the tablet, covering the words towards the sides. Needless to say, they were totally going after the Kindle market
I use my N7 mostly for reading books. It would be much easier to palm if it did't have the half inch border on each side of the screen. My fingers would be on the edge, not in front of the screen.
