Nexus 7 User Tips / Re: Unable to open files in Kingsoft Office
« on: February 06, 2013, 07:43:04 PM »
anken, you can now get kingsoftoffice for your desktop (as part of Foxit Office Suite)  if you would like using the same app on both - no conversion of files needed when you go back n forth.

Nexus 7 Apps / Re: Word Processor
« on: February 06, 2013, 07:35:17 PM »
sorry, bjs, I don't know.  I use the app on Android like one or two times a month and have an older Office 2003 version that I use regularly on my desktop, and also use LibreOffice / OpenOffice when I get an incompatible xlsl or Doc file from an external source.

But in reality with all these kinds of applications, the one you already know how to use is without price, compared to the hours needed to learn a new app.

I posted the info on that basis - if you know, use, know well, and are happy with Kingsoft, then it makes sense to use the now available PC port...otherwise, YMMV

nuff said.

Nexus 7 Vs. The Competition / Re: The Big 3 7" Tablets... My Review

" don't "get" widgets; how are they better than just clicking an icon? "

you don't need to click a widget - they are active icons like the difference between a jpg and a gif.

select the widget to display the info you want, for instance the amount of battery left.  most widgets let you customize the display of the active content.

You can now get free kingsoft office for BOTH Android and Windows OS.  Foxit Office Suite includes KingSoft (and their pdf reader which I used to use until they bloated it...i have not checked it recently so they may have slimmed it down since.)

http://www.foxitsoftware.com/downloads/

Now you can use the same app on both and avoid the entire conversion thing...

XBMC works OK on it, not sure what you mean by the "usual channels".  I really don't care for XBMC so after seeing that it worked OK, I uninstalled it.

I've tried XBMC on Windows, Linux and Android and don't see what the hubbub is regarding it as it just seems to add an additional software layer that's not needed.  I prefer to use a video player app to play vids, a music player app to play music, a picture viewer to view pics, a weather app to check the weather, etc... don't need all those rolled into a single app with a terrible interface.

As far as those particular media types and locations, you have a point just not much of one.  However, there are a host of additional streamed media coming from the web as well as transformations to the streams for compatibility that you do NOT mention.  A media server like Plex (an XBMC fork) can change a flash sourced stream to something more compatible to the Flash incompatible destination device on the fly via alternative means as well.  For example Plex can take a HD 1920x1080 MKV w/ dolby 7.1 sound file and tranform the output into one that is designed to be played on a WIFI connected Android phone or tablet while the same file is served to an HD TV over the LAN and an old 4:3 TV via HDMI.  All that is aside from the fact that XBMC or Plex can be run from alternate devices like a Roku or be directed at DLNA or UPnP devices that those apps just may not see and can not serve media to.

So, yes, you just don't see.

One thing to check aside from the app you are streaming with is if the AVI files contain the index.

Like MKV, AVI is a container format and almost anything can be inside but one of the things needed for moving the play pointer (and proper playback) is the index file.  You can see if that index is present at a glance in the Windows Explorer "details view" Length column (eg 01:55:31 = index present)

No index, equals no fast forward or rewind or play from clicked point

I don't quite understand why you are still trying to stream the AVI files rather than just copying them to be later played on the N7 but whatever..

You also might try a more powerful media server - client setup like XBMC or Plex

Nexus 7 Android OS (Jelly Bean) / Re: 4.2.2
« on: February 03, 2013, 02:29:39 PM »
i don't doubt there are uses, and good ones too but for a low cost tablet without an option for the vendor to subsidize via contracts like a phone, something has to give.

At some point there will be decent tablets at every price point to fill every niche and desire but right now, the choices are limited.

yeh, i have a camera which curiously enuf works as a camera !!

nothing is more goofy looking than a 10" tablet being held up to take a pix...mite as well hold up a laptop

you can give it a try thru a process called sideloading.

1) download the .apk file to your n7
2) click settings > security > make sure that 'unknown sources' checkmark is present (allowed) & uncheck Verify Apps if that is needed
3) click the .apk file (in a file manager will work if i recall) to install it  & configure your app
4) go back and reverse changes made to settings if you like (a good idea)

done

The HTC does have a USB port, doesn't it ?  Tried plugging it into the N7 ?  You should be able to xfer files back and forth without any issues once you get the cables connected to the N7.  You will need File Management software to make the mass transfer of files easier.

X-Plore File Manager has a dual pane that might make that easier but there are lots of others.

more than welcome...   :P

be sure to check out the several car mount threads over at XDA as well -- some great ideas and sources for hardware there.

nobody seems very sure at this point but most say NOPE !

in any case you will need to root your N7 and install Timur's special kernal to allow charging while other microUSB connections are made - and YES this is doable but requires a special cable for the microUSB port which is all you need other than a (powered) hub if you want more than one device connected OTG.

You can read all about that and benefit from the experiences of several others who have posted over at XDA forums with some of the same car mount issues as you raise.

http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1839145

see post 32 for the required kernal mod
