Nexus 7 General Discussion / Re: Gift for nephew's new Nexus...books?
« on: February 14, 2013, 04:20:09 PM »
Amazon.com and Barnes & Noble are the most commonly used places for eBook purchase.  Your local library will lend eBooks, often times using an application named Overdrive and most commonly in the ePub format.  Generally eBook library rental can be done over the internet just as purchase from Amazon, etc.  One problem you will encounter is digital rights management (copy protection, DRM) that restricts the use of purchased books and another is the wide variety of incompatible eBook formats (like the tower of babel, heh).  You can add almost any eReader device to your Amazon account and then eBooks will be downloaded automatically by your home WiFi or you can use your PC.  You will find that it is best to download to each device separately rather than transfer between them since files are often inaccessible when downloaded into a Kindle or Google Reader app.

It's always a good idea to start the process by downloading free books that almost always are free from DRM once you have your N7 setup to test out various readers, etc.  Here are some good sources to get  you all started.

Good Evening Bigtroutz,
In a free market economy the seller can choose what his asking price is.  The true value of the product is the highest price the seller can sell a quantity which will bring him the maximum profit.

you think ?

A free market is whatever a seller and buyer agree is the proper price for a product.... period.   You, my friend, are simply misinformed.
Who is John Galt ?  We should be discovering shortly.

Android apps are incredibly cheap by comparison to desktop apps.  I have no idea how or why this happened but a buck or 12 dollars, for instance, for a functional app is a steal, as are all of the trivial prices asked asked for Android software.  I find your attitude about paying for obviously complicated app development insulting as if free software was your right and you must discard consideration of any software with such modest costs out of hand.

Harsh is what you do, take from the productive without any thought for their effort as if it were the right thing to do.  Think about it.  Few are going to get stinking rich selling apps at Android kind of prices but at least you can pay for some of their living expenses so they keep on coding.

I am happy that you have resolved your issue and can read in peace, which is what it is all about.  Enjoy your new reader and the new worlds that books can bring.

I do buy books frequently but here is a resource that I find useful if you do like to economize, they are up to 672 linked locations now:

typically each proprietary reader effectively hides the books you download internally in an effort to force user fidelity.  Kindle eReader sticks theirs in \sd\Android\data\com.amazon.kindle\ and renames them with an alphanumeric code after splitting the cover and graphics to other files.  I would expect Nook to do something similar and it may actually use the same folder paths with com.nook.books or some such.  In any case, you can give a look with a File Manager app like ESFileManager.

Typically each app will allow you to download the generic form to your pc for the desktop version of the app sometimes...so perhaps you can try that to get a transferable copy.

nope, if you take the few minutes required you can read in one of the reviews that REJECTS Mantano reader that the reviewer thinks it has WAY too many bugs that make it crash....curiously enough.

but it was just too limited in capabilities compared to the others, as a matter of fact.

Hello "BJS229"
No, I do not think you need to be on-line to get turn by turn navigation on "Google Maps" nor indeed any other SatNav system.  It is almost impossible to expect to have a wifi connection all the tme whilst driving.  Yes, you could use the cellphone signal, but that would be costly.
Hello "BIGTROUTZ"
Yes, but at least some of the apps you mention are payable.  I never paid for the Nokia aps.

some of the apps are free tho, in any case whats your point ?  You refuse to spend a flat rate of something like12 bux for sygic because you are too cheap to pay developers a pittance for months of their past and future effort ? If they supply something you get value from on an ongoing basis you should reconsider.  But then there are clearly too many spongers around already.

My suggestion is to switch to a more stable eReader since there are just so many good ones; I tried Mantano and decided to move along.

I like coolreader and moonreader+ but there are many others

Nexus 7 User Tips / Re: Unable to open files in Kingsoft Office
« on: February 09, 2013, 02:15:11 AM »
I always thought that PDF files in general were static, uneditable, graphic representations of text on a page like a photo and as such, I never used that format for editing.  Yes. I know that some commenting and annotating has generally been possible on PDF files.  At any rate, the first thing I ever did with a PDF was to convert the text within into some different format, either one for an eReader (like.prc) because PDF formats were a pain in the ass to read on an eReader, DOC if I wanted to edit and send along to someone else, or txt if I was having trouble getting anything at all out of the original.  Some PDF files ARE actual pictures so you can not convert them at all in fact.  But there is a bewildering array of material within any particular PDF source file - like a box of chocolates.

At any rate, I suggest you install kingsoft on your desktop if you can and work out how to save in the various formats and then transfer to the N7 after that is all working well.  As far as I can tell, Kingsoft has a decent file subsystem so that you should be able to save and load documents from any folder.  I tend to put mine (by usb wired Win Explorer transfer) into \Downloads or \Books or whatever default folder kingsoft creates.

it depends on where the processing of the gps info occurs.  the built in nav does the calculations in the cloud but there are several other nav apps that do the processing on the local device and these apps only require that you download the maps in the area where your gps signal will be.

According to the info i have read, NavFree, Sygic, CoPilot and others all will allow you to download maps and run without a WiFi or other live connection.  A bit more work on your part and you can use your N7 as you would a Garmin.

There are folks doing dash mounts that use a kernal made to allow charging while OTG adapter is connected all thru the microUSB connector....no need for pogo at all.

ask if you have any questions about it - I have been using it for about 3 months now, so I am no expert but it is alot more capable than XBMC by default without burrowing into all the settings, pre-reqs, forum threads, etc.

Just worked and saw all my DLNA devices when XBMC sat there and scratched it's figurative ass, lol

taken a look at Plex ?
