Get one of the cheap globe style speakers that sell for like 20 bucks. Work well and will give you the volume you want.

I have noted the problem with my 2012 N7 which will slowly drain when turned off, not certain of the rate since I have given it to a friend

I personally wouldn't give it to an eight year old for use without adult supervision. Just me but I always had my kids computers in a public area in the house and they were never in their rooms.

Agreed with Matt. Often using a vacuum is also better than using compressed air. Compressed air can push moisture into crevices while a vacuum sucks the moisture away.
Try the rice trick.

Agree with some of what you say, especially with MS charging hundreds of dollars for their OS. I run Linux (Ubuntu) at home in conjunction with Windows but I still find Linux has some more maturity to go before the masses accept it, probably the same goes for Chrome OS.

I was going to suggest to uninstall the last couple of apps you put on the device. I find this usually solves most if my issues. I am betting something was running in the background and was grinding the CPU like crazy
