I'm the op. I tried a different app and now tethering works fine. Sorry to have bothered the forum.

No problem. I think we're just confused with the suggestion that Google did something to prevent tethering on a Wi-Fi only device... Doesn't make much sense.

I have a Droid 3 as my phone and a NEXUS 7 tablet. Neither device is rooted!

On the Droid 3, I have FoxFi (paid version) which sets up a mobile hotspot (with password security).

Once FoxFi s running, I just open WiFi on my NEXUS 7 and connect just like you would with any other secured wireless network.

No muss, No Fuss.

On my Xperia Active, I turn on tethering and use it.
Even less muss 'n fuss.

Thanks everyone.

I read this thread and dloaded & installed Open Garden on my
Razr Maxx, Nexus 7, & Samsung Ultra book series 5 and it works.

I did notice that some apps do not recognize  the connection to the
internet via Bluetooth but I have not had the time to really put
this to the test.

Well, anyway Thanks again.

Is your RAZR rooted? Have you considered the sqlite hack?

loociddreemr,

None of my droid devices are rooted.

Open Garden is great if your broadband is registering a decent strength.
Some apps, like Netflix, does not see the connection to the internet and won't stream video.

I am going to try PDAnet Tablet next......
