Help with tethering
« on: March 02, 2013, 05:35:19 PM »
I have a new nexus 7 wifi tablet which connects fine with my home wlan.

When I am away from home I need it to tether to my phone so I can use its G3. So I installed open garden on the android phone and set tethering on. But the nexus 7 cannot see it in the wifi screen so I cannot connect.

What am I doing wrong? Do I need to install something on the nexus 7 to make it work? Do I need to turn bluetooth on? Change a setting?

Thanks

I think you need the app on the phone and the tablet. Turn on bluetooth?

ALternatives

bt auto connect

ANd https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=de.refluxa.android.bat
bluetooth tether

Both phone and nexus are rooted.
Phone is LG Optimus Q running android 2.3.4 with a custom rom.
I don't have the app on the nexus. Maybe I should do that first.

Yes, the app is required on both devices. However, that's not my first choice. It has to be enabled on both devices everytime. Try Wi-Fi Tether for Root users from Google play. It will simulate a traditional hotspot.

The Open G  app is not needed on both.. just the phone.  Nexus should see the open Wi-Fi and connect with your initial command.
No need to anything else after connecting the first time.  I used it for 3 months to get online outside my house.

The thing is.. I tried a bunch of different options.. foxfi .. the app that loocid suggested.. I couldn't get anything to work  or stay connected except open g. There is no wrong answer here. I think it depends on your phone and service.  I used Boost and an Android phone.

I used Pdatablet.net app on the Nexus to connect with Foxfi Wi-Fi tether and Bluetooth. You might want to check it out if Open Garden doesn't work for you.
Foxfi goes on the phone.

Thank you all. I will work on it with the various options.

I just wanted to say this nexus 7 forum has been very helpful. You guys have been very kind to a newbie and I've learned a lot already. Hopefully I will soon need less help and maybe help others where I can. Thank you all!

I've been reading and got the impression that the nexus 7 cannot see ad hoc hot spots. Is that true? If true it might explain why it cannot see my phone's tether.

Can tethering be achieved via usb cable from phone to nexus?

Success! Wifi tether worked for me. N7 can now tether to my phone. So I guess the n7 can see ad hoc hot spots if the phone profile is correctly set.

Still wondering if usb wired tethering is possible.
