Remember that just because the device is 3g capable, it doesn't mean that you will automatically have 3g connectivity. You must pay a monthly service fee to your local carrier for the data access.

I found that out too. At first I was thinking connectivity was built in for free!!  However, after asking a couple questions, I found out it wasn't the case. Going to try to get the cheapest local carrier that has 3g..

Will do! They are going to be sick of me at Staples. This will be the 3rd time taking a Nexus 7 back. I took the 16 gb back, and got a 32gb. Now, they have come with the 3g version of the 32gb, and all within my 14 day return period. The 13th is my 14th day. So, I will take this back on the 11th..

It is sometimes cheaper to use your cell phone carrier. Some phones have hot spot capability and you can use them to tether. I am with Boost. Unlimited talk, text and data for Android is 55 a month. It can go as low as 40 a month with the shrinkage promotion. If you pay 6 months on time it goes down $5. 18 months on time $15 credit= $40. THEY OFFER Hotspot for an extra $10 a month. That is the cheapest I have seen for Hot spot. Of course you need a phone that is capable.

Call me a Luddite, but I hate parasitic fees.  I just can't see paying $300 for a N7 3g, and then spending $300+ every year for the duration of ownership just to get a data feed to it.

I wouldn't spend the extra cash either being that I tether with my phone and have 3g anyway.

4gLTE tether from my RAZR Maxx. Its faster and I can do it all day without worrying about my battery!

Naw, not going to call you a Luddite, and most of us hate the extra fees too. However, that is the way of life these days. I recall when gas was 20cents a gallon, and top of the line Mercedes was about 10k. Not any more!! With that said, you could just use you N7 when you around free wifi, and home. Other than that, it seems one has to pay.. No way around that!

I had to carry a cell phone for work.  I swore I would't carry that albatross around my neck when I retired.  So, SWMBO & I share a prepaid cell phone.  I charge it with $25 every 90 days, which keeps my cost ~$100/year.  The phone is capable of web browsing, but I won't sign up for a data plan.

For me, Windows 3.1 and eventually AOL 1.0 and cell phones led me into this whole tablet thing. I can't live without a cell phone and a flowing data plan of some sort.
