32Gb N7 how to Root easily?
« on: November 05, 2012, 03:45:13 AM »
I am worried because I totally bricked my galaxy tab whilst trying a flash upgrade.  I am not that good with computers.

I only use Ubuntu as main laptop operating system and already I am unable to get the laptop to connect with my new Tablet despite trying workarounds that I have read.

My dilemma is that I want to use a memory stick and I understand the N7 needs rooting?   I am uneasy about this but cant see how I could anyway as I cant connect the N7 to a pc?

Is there a one click solution I could download on to the device?

You can use Nexus media importer app with an OTG cable to view not write usb storage without being rooted. I only know of a one click root using windows. Not familiar with Ubuntu.

Tried after considerable thought to root via toolkit.

All seemed to go well  [although I wasn't sure when it kept saying 'waiting to reboot, if I should press the on off button, which I did]

however when checking with Root Checker, it tells me I do not have root access.

Think I best leave alone as I will end up bricking this one too

@ zalanz

Did you follow the Forum's Guide to rooting at this Link?

After the automated process, you have to update the SU binaries by opening the SuperSU app. Then install busybox with the installed app.

I had the same problem and left it alone as well.  I used version 1.5.4 of the tool kit.

That is the next step, but if you do not achieve root SuperSU and busybox will not allow you to install.  I ran thru this procedure 6 or 7 times with no success.

Have you verified that your tablet is recognized as an adb device? You can do so by typing adb devices at a command prompt from the directory where adb is installed.

If you end up with those two programs on the tablet I thought that was part of the root process. What happens when you install busy box or try? What is the error message?

Let me suggest an alternative rooting toolkit by mskip at xda. It reportedly runs on 4.1.2 and can be downloaded at http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1809195

Answer: Those 2 programs were on my rooted tablet under 4.1.1 and stayed there.  Busybox failed b/c I was not rooted.

Update: Now as of this afternoon  I am now rooted under 4.1.2.  I noticed WugFresh had put a new version (1.5.5) out so I switched over to Windows 7 from Linux Mint 13,  downloaded and unzipped the zip file and ran the ROOT option of the tool kit.  I was already unlocked  Ran SuperSU (was not asked about the binaries).  Ran busybox and it worked (installed).  I went back and uninstalled SuperSU and reinstalled it (and was prompted to update the binaries) .  I am now rooted again thanks to WugFresh and all his coding efforts.

This post is about a 32GB Nexus 7 and mine is a first round Nexus 7 16GB.  I suspect WugFresh tool kit will work on either device and suggest people be directed to the new version.   WugFresh must have made numerous discoveries as he fixed things.  Thanks again.

I will try to change the subject title to solved.  In my case it is.

@ blue_bullet

Thanks for the feedback and we are happy to see you have achieved root. As a note following bjs229's pervious post or the Forum Guide to Rooting will carry any user to the latest version of Wugfresh's toolKit, so for future reference, make sure you have the latest version of the toolkit, before attempting root.
