Hi.
I am guess you're new to Android. Apologies if you're not and I totally misunderstood your question.

The main home screen is the middle one. That's the one you go to when you press home.

You can populate your home screen and all the others with anything you like. And move them around as you please. Place icons and widgets.
You also have your app drawer to access all your apps in one place. That's the middle icon. A circle with 6 dots.

When you install new apps Nexus may attempt to place them in the first available space. And that may be not your centre screen. So move them around. Remember. Its not an iPad. You don't have to accept the apps to be where they are. You're in control.

I have a clock and calendar on my centre and all the side screens have a few apps and widgets in a organized form. Entertainment apps in once screen, social on another... Office. Google. And so on.

Hope this helps.

sorry might not have explained myself correctly.
when i download apps they do go into main home screen but they also send an icon onto desktop i suppose as tes im new to android,i then hold and move to place beside others that i have downloaded .
the problem is that when i switch tablet on i get a blank screen and i have to swipe every time to get the apps that i have on screen.
i am wondering if there is a setting that when i start up the screen goes straight to the apps and i donot have to swipe to get them.
sorry if i am confusing the matter but i cant seem to explain myself correctly, all i want is when i stitch on the apps are there and i dont have to swipe
thanks for getting back to me

To expand on jaydd's post, Turn on your Nexus 7 and you will be at your "Home Screen" then swipe left or right to reach the screen that contains your apps. Then press and hold the app icon until a notification box pops up and without releasing the icon drag it to the edge of the screen and the icon will be moved to that screen. Once you reach the home screen, release the icon and it will now reside on that screen, unless you decide to move it again. Pressing the center icon at the bottom of the screen, which looks like a house, will always take you to your home screen.

Maybe our OP is referring to the lock screen...?

Right pulldown menu >settings > security > screen lock > none

I will give loociddreemr a thumbs up on that suggestion. I tend to forget the lockscreen, since I have it set to none as suggested.

I haven't used a lock screen since day 2. I find it super annoying. I guess if the nexus was pocket dialing it would be useful for me.
