Nexus 7 battery charging issues.
« on: February 01, 2013, 01:05:10 PM »
My nexus 7 is been giving me problems lately when it cokes to charging. From 3% to 100% it take about one full day (12 hours). I've tried rebooting, screen brightness is at the lowest level, GPS is off. Anyone having the same problem? I also play a lot on my tablet, often while the charged is still connected. Anyone have any ideas if that might be the problem? Looking forward to hearing from you guys.

If your using your tablet whilst charging it's going to take longer but it still shouldn't take that long...

It could be a rogue application, take a look at your battery stats...

Settings> Battery...

What's using the most or is there anything that shouldn't be there consuming lots of power?

Worse case scenario is to factory data reset and start from scratch.

He screen takes 60% of the charge. Also if I do a factory reset what will happen?

That sounds normal but what else is on there?

A factory data reset will wipe the whole device, as it was when you got it so I understand you my be reluctant to do this.
Let's see if we can resolve this before we get to the reset stage.

I find mines the same,  charging used to take a couple of hours but now takes forever,  usually about 8 hours,  mine all seemed to start after update to 4.2

If these users would do some rudimentary detective work for us/themselves, I think they'd identify their problems as rogue apps.  Screen should account for 80-95% of battery usage.  If they turn their N7s off, charge time should drop to <4 hours, & identify the problem as high battery usage.  If they check Settings > Battery, the battery hog processes should tell us where the problems lie.

I notice that if I charge while using the nexus7, it will only maintenance charge. Then if I turn the screen off it sometimes continues the trickle charge. If I unplug then reattach the cord while off or asleep it will jump up to maximum charge rate.

The attached screen shot is aberrant behavior. The previous screen said charging- ac. Note that while the screen is off and asleep with no wifi or gps and showing charging state, there is no rise in the graph!
Imo a 4.2.1 firmware bug.

I took a screenshot but it won't let me upload it. It said 100% not charging, 6s on battery. MediaServer 56%  Android OS 30%  Tablet Idle 6%  Wi-Fi 5%  Android System 5%. That is after fully charging it while it was turned of.

This is what you should be seeing. 56% Media Server is atrocious! No battery gain during charging is wrong, too.

I'm not the lowest of the low, but I am the slowest of the slow (49.6 mpg over 38k miles in  Scion xB)

I found out that the issue was most likely caused by issues with my music, videos or photos. I did a factory reset and everything seems to be fine. I checked other forum s and it seems the media server issue has been around for a while. Thanks for the help. I'll let you know if anything comes up.

Going through the google issues threads, found these tips that are working for me!

In google now, settings, privacy and accounts, uncheck - show recent searches.

In local (or latitude), settings, location settings, uncheck - enable location history.

This has about doubled my battery life. Mediaserver is gone from the battery use chart. After an hour and a half with wifi on I'm down to 90%, instead of 80% before. Just started, will report any changes.

Also, in the graph, there are no more instances of the tablet coming awake while the screen is off. So this may help with the charging issue as well. Thx to bird for pointing the way!

Since the tablet is no longer waking every few minutes to report the location, I can now leave wifi on and it will stay off during screen sleep. (Keep wifi on during sleep set to never)

My issue solved!
