Do i need to root my Nexux7 ?

Hi - i'm a new, proud owner of Nexus 7 & absolutely lovin' it.  I read somewhere that it's worth rooting the device.
Once it's rooted, does it mean i loose everything that is already on it ? 
How can i restore it with applns/ bring it to working level.

Secondly, how can i download Andriod games from my PC & transfer to tablet ?   Reason, i have faster internet on my PC.

Hi Maverick27,

Rooting is optional, it gives you the user access to the / level of the system which is like Administrator rights in Window. Root gives you the ability to edit the / level of the system, including editing files like the build.prop, flashing custom ROM's and kernels and running root only applications like Stickmount and Root Explorer.
Rooting is a personal choice so if you think that rooting is something you'd be interested in then go for it and enjoy your tablet.

JayJ is correct and I will add that when rooting you will loose everything on your tablet, but if you use Mark Skippen's Root Toolkit for the Nexus 7, you can backup your tablet to your computer before rooting.

Based on your post, I guess you a newbie (like me) As mentioned in the two preceeding posts, rooting give you more option to "explore" your new toy. However, it will require spending more time to "experiment" and to learn

If you are only interested in watching movies, or listening to music etc ..from an external  flash drive using the OTG adapter, then rooting is not necessary

I rooted mine and in the process I learnt a few things as well as screwing up a few times LOL... (fortunately, the mods in this forum quickly came to my rescue)

If I were to buy a NEW N7, I would not root it since I can install "Nexus Media Importer" to watch movies and reading ebooks ...... because this is all that I need

In summary, it a personal choice
