New Nexus 7 as a GPS device?
« on: August 01, 2013, 08:09:53 AM »
I expected to be able to use google maps but when I tried it, it didn't work. I thought the new N7 is connected to GPS. Does it work as a GPS device, do I need to download something?

Thanks,
Jimmy

You should be using the Google Maps for Android App that's installed on your N7, with Location Services all enabled.  Your N7 will work as a GPS as long as you download area maps to your N7, and/or you have an Internet connection.

I am still not able to use Google Maps away from wifi. At home, I typed in "OK Maps" in an attempt to download local maps but it still doesn't work.

I wonder how can I download California Maps on to the device. For a device without manual, Google has certainly make it extremely user unfriendly.

Try Navfree  in the Play Store, you should be able to download/store local maps....

I use Navfree, which I find excellent.

Also, have you checked your GPS settings on your Nexus 7?

To control what location information your device can use, go to Settings > Personal > Location Access.

When the Access to my location switch at the top of the screen is On, you can select either or both of these tick boxes:

GPS satellites. Just like a GPS device in your car lets your device calculate your location based on satellite signals.

Wi-Fi & mobile network location. Lets your device use Google's location service to help estimate your location faster, with or without help from GPS.

When the switch is Off, your device can’t find your precise location or share it with any apps.
