For my PC Desktop, I use Acronis True Image 10 to make full system backup and restores to my external hard drive.
Is it possible to do the same for the new Nexus 7 2013 using a Slimport or OTG cable?
I would like to have this in case some day I need to restore my Nexus 7 back to the point of the day I made the backup.

A full image or Nandroid Backup is only available with a rooted Nexus 7 using CWM or TWRP. One of the many advantages of root. The nandroid backup is saved to a protected area of the Nexus 7's internal storage.

Yes rooting does void your warranty, but you can remove root from your device if you desire. The entire rooting guide is Here.

How about using Google+ for BU&R ?  Easy and automatic each time Google synchs.  Not sure how effective Restore function is, but GooglePlay and Asus recommend this when doing a "factory reset"

Google+ will only backup your pictures and Google Play will remember your installed applications but not those applications data nor the system.
In all honesty the OP's best bet would be Helium - App Sync & Backup, Helium works for both a rooted and non rooted devices, the later requiring a PC application to be used every time the device is rebooted. Helium allows you to backup your applications data, you can even sync that data across multiple devices. Personally I see no point in the OP rooting just to create nandroid backups, I'm a root advocate but rooting for this reason is pointless. A nandroid is only needed if a user is modding, tweaking or flashing the system and the nandroid is a backup. Android isn't like Windows and unless your playing with the system, restoring a backup or a restore point isn't nessecary.

The OP asked for an image equal to an Acronis backup on a PC. Although backup methods exist for applications and user data, the true equal is a Nandroid backup.

I understand what the OP asked for but a nandroid isn't needed unless the device is rooted and the user is modding system files.
In actual fact a nandroid is closer to a restore point and a factory image is the backup which Google offer on their site, therefore there's no need to root just to backup.
