As a huge Android and technology fan I'm always fascinated by how quickly our world is changing in this world of mobile technology. Now we all know how quickly smartphones and Android in particular have become nearly ubiquitous, but the below chart shows just how fast. In a nutshell, the Android operating system, first introduced a short 5 years ago has been adopted at a rate that is simply unprecedented in tech history.
The chart was based on data crunched and analyzed by Asymco analyst Horace Dediu. He shows that while introduced a full year after Apple's iOS platform, Android has reached the 1 billion user mark well before its rival, which stands at 700 million activations, a full 30% less. The chart shows several other trends and data as well including the breakdown internationally of smartphone adoption as a whole as well as how mobile os's such as iOS and Android have surpassed Windows PCs in number of sales.
What's perhaps most exciting is how much of the world still remains to be conquered by smartphones. Less than half...in some countries much less than half....of consumers are using smartphones which means there's still plenty of growth left for Android and iOS. In some ways we're still in the early days of smart phones and Android seems destined to be the dominant OS for our mobile technology future.Technology Review
