Chrome tabs

I ask this at the risk of sounding stupid.

When I go to Chrome, there are literally hundreds of tabs, most titled "new tabs". I try to cancel each screen when finishing, but still have scads of tabs. Is this a problem or is it normal? Is there a way to cancel all tabs at once?
