Unable to connect my N7 to laptop
« on: February 12, 2014, 11:55:33 PM »
Original problem:
N7 suddenly did not show up on laptop when connected via USB. Have tried different USB Ports with the same results. Other devices are working well with those ports.
N7 shows up in Device Manager as working properly.
Have tried so many different fixes without success. Finally decided to update to the newest version from JWR66Y.
From there things went downhill....Finally with the help of Wugfresh Toolkit I was able to update to KOT49H.
It did a factory reset. I had made a backup the day before and also saved a backup(Titanium Pro) to my laptop.
Now to my question:
I'm still unable to see my N7 files on my laptop. When connecting via USB and go to “My Computer” it does not show but it shows up as working fine in Device Manager.
Have gone through all of the settings I can think of but nothing seems to help.
Can anybody help me to be able to connect and see my N7 on the laptop. It has worked before.... From there I could then restore my backed up files.
I will appreciate any suggestions!!!!!!!! Thanks in advance, Ann

Sometimes the windows adb drivers interfere and you need to delete and install the composite driver. I have to reset drivers when changing nexus devices as well.

Thank you matt!
It's USB mode. You mentioned reinstalling the drivers?  Do I go to Device Manager & uninstall the drivers  for the N7 and then connect via USB and let the drivers load up again?
Thanks for taking the time to write. I have spent many frustrated hours and appreciate your help very much. Ann

If you haven't discovered it yet, go to settings, storage and the 3 dot icon upper right will change between ptp and mtp modes. In windows control panel, system, show all devices, and see if it says android composite driver. You can delete and let it reinstall when you plug in the nexus but first try rebooting the tablet while it is connected.
Also you may need to toggle off USB debugging in developer options on the nexus as that may be loading adb drivers instead of picture transfer protocol or media transfer protocol drivers. Ptp mtp.

If you still have trouble, I'll go find the android SDK driver link.

Thank you for your help, matt!!
I haven't had time to get back to answer you and  to my problem sooner.
In the meantime, I returned my N7 back to factory condition and rooted again.  Was able to reinstall many apps from the backups.
I never had this much trouble updating the OS before....
The drivers now installed are ADB Interface.  I guess I didn't toggle off USB debugging in time.  The desktop icon now showed a camera which I changed to something else. Everything seems to be working o.k. so far.
To get everything the way it should be.....could I delete the driver in Device Manager, reboot the laptop and then toggle off USB debugging and let Windows search for the correct driver while my beloved N7 is hooked up via USB? Would I have to make any other changes?
I appreciate your help very much!!!!!! Ann

Turn off USB debug, that will disable adb drivers and hopefully windows will load the composite driver. If not, reboot the nexus while connected.

Here's an xda thread that explains how to get mtp, ptp and adb to play nice, tho a bit convoluted.

Thank you matt!!!!!!!!!!!
Thank you for your help and patience. I followed the threat from  xda-developer and it worked. Now I finally got the right drivers and can see all of the files.
Life is good!  Thank you so much!!  Ann

Turn off USB debugging, delete the ADB drivers in Device Manager, then reboot the device while it's still plugged in. Windows recognized the device as an MTP device & installed the drivers before it even fully booted.

Another XDA thread
I used to be crazy until I found out that insane pays more.

Where am I?  What am I doing in this handbasket?

Thank you, tiny.
I have made notes of it for future reference.  I'm very grateful for this forum. Ann
