I just rooted my Nexus7 (2012), which was (and is) running KitKat 4.4.4.   Now, if the time comes when I am offered a later Android OS, what do I do?

Wait for advanced users to take the OTA and determine the best route to retain/restore root. As soon as the information is available, we will have an upgrade guide.
