What is the fastest Android version to use?

Hi there,

I recently bought a 2nd Nexus 7 tablet, and I have decided to go through all the OTA updates.
Now, it has the latest Android L version but it's tooooooooooooo damn slow.
It's almost unusable... even for simple things.

I'd like to install a worthy OS, that offers fast usability. I don't care about versions, I use this Nexus 7 alsmot for eBook reading and some internet browing...

So, which OS version to use? Is there any alternative OS, such as CyanogenMod or any other similar ones you can advice me to install?

Personally, I've gone back to 4.4, mostly because it seems a lot easier on the battery.
