How Important is the 16GB?

I mentioned this elsewhere but the Nexus 7 has already been rooted and 'StickMount' has already been installed by a hacker onto his Nexus 7 and he says that he is able to use a standard usb flash drive with it.

Although it seems media cannot be played off directly from the mounted storage. Fingers crossed.

It is annoying that a top of the line tablet has to be rooted to do external storage.

See why I like to access external storage like a sd card reader with a cable though the micro usb  is for pictures. It's so much easy to use photo programs to resize and adjust your pictures before emailing or uploading to a cloud photo website on a 7 or 10 inch  tablet its not funny. So for me the ability to import photos from a external sd memory card in a reader is import feature and the major reason why I did not get a kindle fire . So I'd like to know if file transfers are possible? The quad core processor would make basic photo editing go much faster. Plus the compact size nexus 7 would make a great compact travel companion help me leave bulker netbook pc at home for leisure travel.

i think instead of "wishing" we had more storage/external drive we should be wishing the nexus 7 came with 4g, shouldn't we? that's an extra 5 gigs from google, from dropbox, on and on that can be managed on the go. given that verizon is restructuring its data plans so that "smart" devices all draw from one pool of data, i think that would have been the best way to go

I've already got tethering in my cell plan, and I wouldn't want a separate data plan for a tablet anyway... I'll be fine with 16 gigs and tethering to my iPhone till I get a galaxy nexus once the injunction is lifted,..

Plan on the OS and installed apps using 2-3 gb of your internal memory (8 or 16 gb). Therefore your tablet choice will depend on how you plan to use your device. Cloud storage is great but remember you have to have WiFi access to use it. So if you plan on having a movie available for a commute it will require 700 mb to 1.5 gb of storage. Also remember that external storage by the micro usb may require rooting. As an example, my current 32 gb TPT, with tons of installed apps has consumed 4.7 gb of the internal memory. The 8 gb version of the Nexus 7 should be plenty for most users, but if your usage requires additional storage $50 is a bargain.

I agree... I went ahead and got the 16 Gig version just to be safe, but we'll see if I ever chew threw that much.

Hello! Are you using your iphone as a hotspot for your Nexus? Does it work? Are there cell plans that dont allow tethering? help please.. Thanx

Sprint sells a hotspot option plan. I remember it being like 30 extra a month. Tethering as far as I know goes against terms of service with most carriers. I have heard of folks getting caught and being sent threatening emails that stated they would be canceled if further evidence of tethering was discovered.

I've had my Nexus 7 16GB for about a month, and so far I've loaded less than a gig of stuff (including quite a few documents, and a GPS map of Pennsylvania).  My guess is that 8GB should be plenty for most people, unless you plan to use it as a traveling workstation, traveling entertainment center, or as a mobile GPS.

There are free apps which allow you to access the files on an external USB flash drive.  Adapter cables are very inexpensive online, impossible to find locally.

I've got the 8GB version coming but I wonder if I should have gone for the 16GB... My thinking was thus: I don't plan on storing a lot of movies or space-hogging content on board, just mostly surfing, listening to music, etc. so I'm hoping that I won't need all that much mem.  This will be my first tablet so I don't really know how I'll be using it on a daily basis.  If money were no object then maybe I would have gone for Galaxy or one of the high-end, expensive models.  But price did enter into my decision to go with the Nexus.  Am I just fooling myself?

Based on usage so far, even 16 Gb is not enough.  I wish that it had expandable storage for up to 64Gb.  I bet hat future version would have it.  As long as you remove movies and shows that you have watched, there is not much of problem, however.

I bought the 8GB N7.  I've got 74 apps loaded (including the mandatory Google apps), including some data-heavy astronomy (2GB data files) & birding (1GB data files) apps.  I've also got 5GB of Nandroid backups stored.

Bottom line?  I've still got 5GB free OEM storage, because my N7 is rooted, and those huge data files and backups are stored on a $20 USB flash drive.

Rooting and then using Stickmount with an OTG cable is an option but for those that don't care to root there is an app on Google Play called "Nexus Media Importer" ($1.99) that lets you READ (no write capability) media files from a USB thumb drive via an OTG cable.  Works pretty well and no root needed.
