Nexus 7 Polls / Re: The Nexus 9 Will You Make the Switch?
« on: October 26, 2014, 04:41:17 PM »
Seems I'm going the opposite way to most people here.

If I want "big screen "  I still have my Lenovo Thinkpad  Tablet (still got yours SPrime ?) Heavy and slow in comparison but still gets the job done.

Was looking at new larger screen,  faster processor phones (I have an s3) while holidaying in Malaysia recently but decided that the Nexus 7 does most  of my "heavy lifting ". My phone is pretty much just a phone these days.

7" Nexus is still perfect compromise between size,  weight and performance for me atm  :)

New Nexus 7 Cameras (2nd Gen) / Re: Camera apps
« on: December 24, 2013, 08:34:31 PM »
If you're using a digital camera, buy an Eyefi card.  I'm in holiday in Bali at the mo.  Take piccies  with my Panasonic G3, use direct mode to load them automatically to my tablet .  Can review my pics on a much larger and better screen than the built in one, can then edit (mainly crop and straighten) and post in an appropriate site.

Also means you have a backup of pics in case you lose or damage your sdcard.  If you're really paranoid you can also automatically upload to popular web based photo sites as well once you're in WiFi range.

Bit of a draw in battery life on your camera but well worth it.

Have the Plantronocs Backbeat Gos. Nice and light, about 6 hour life but the biggest issue is they aren't multi pair so every time I want to switch from my Nexus to my phone I have to re-pair.  The Go 2s are multipair however......

Nexus 7 Polls / Re: Attn Nexus 7 Owners: Which Phone Do You Own?
« on: December 03, 2013, 08:51:53 PM »
After being a Windows Mobile fanatic in the mid 2000s with an 02 Atom and an HP Data Messenger, it was time to buy a new phone.  All the current Windows Mobile phones at the time had HUGE screens so based purely on screen size I ended up with an HTC Desire. I actually new nothing about Android at the time. With it's 3.7" screen it was perfect. I mean the Windows based HTC Desire HD2 had a 4.3". Way too big lol.

After about a week I discovered the joys of Android, rooting, alternate Roms etc . This would have been around 2010. It wasn't till this year I decided it was time to upgrade to a new phone.  I was a toss up between the Nexus 4 and the S3 however because of the lack of micro SD support (especially useful for keeping Nandroids and Titanium Backups when alternate romming ) and the fact there there was heaps of peripheral support I ended up with the S3. The "disadvantage" of a big screen is now a plus as I reach the 50 yo grumpy old man stage and my eye sight deteriorates :)

My HTC Desire still sees use as a media/GPS player and still get's the latest versions of Android stuck on it.  The Australian carrier stop support at Gingerbread and yet mine's had everything thrown on it up to Jelly Bean and once there's a stable Kit Kat rom that'll end up on it as well.

Strangely for my S3, while it's had multiple AOSP roms on it like CM or PA, I find myself going back to Touchwiz based Roms ( currently Android Revolution HD), as unlike many manufacturer skins, Samsung adds useful stuff rather than pure bloatware !

In terms of tablets, it's always been Android, the original Galaxy Tab, the Thinkpad Tablet ( like a few of us here) , a Nexus 2012 and then a Nexus 2013.

I actually refuse to purchase an apple iproduct (mp3, phone, tablet)  as I don't want to be an isheep and appreciate the openess and lack of restrictions of Android devices :)

For those of you who don't want to muck around with adb side loading and already have root and custom recovery I loaded this:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2525024

Just flash via recovery :)

Made sure I had the latest search, loaded the new launcher.apk that's around (you still keep your old one) and now have 4.4.without having to reload any apps and have the GEL launcher :)

Nexus 7 Apps / Re: Best Reminders/To Do Apps for Android?
« on: November 09, 2013, 07:47:05 PM »
Used to use Col Reminder for reminders but now use Google Now.

Fire it up and speak your reminder "set reminder for tomorrow at 830 am"

Seems to work pretty well.

Can you see a keyboard or mouse  with  your cable?  If not I'd suggest the cable is the issue!

Nexus 7 Root, Hacks, Mods And Development / Re: Paranoid Android and PIE
« on: January 26, 2013, 05:22:00 PM »
I dirty upgraded the first versions and then with 3.1 ended up clean installing. Haven't had any issues.  But if course the"problem"with Android is that it's so "fragmented" that what errors for some doesn't happen for others.

Addendum

Just tried Spotify,Tuned in Radio,Dice Player and the standard music player with an X-mini capsule 2 plugged in and no issue.  Of course YMMV :)

Nexus 7 Accessories / Re: Noreve Leather Case Review
« on: December 05, 2012, 05:20:46 PM »
Truly elegant and classy, it is undoubtedly a masterpiece of craftsmanship.

But, does it offer adequate protection against the Nexus 7's Achilles' heel: accidental drops?

Nothing short of concrete is going to truly protect any electronic device from dropping really.

I haven't dropped it in the Noreve case, but I would say that the "padding" on all the corners and top and bottom would be sufficient to be able to protect your baby :)
