Anyone Tethered to an Android Phone?
« on: August 07, 2012, 02:32:15 PM »
I have a rooted Motorola Triumph phone and I'd like to use it as a hotspot for my N7.  I wonder if anyone is using an Android phone for the wifi on their N7.

I have the exact same setup, you can bluetooth the nexus 7 to your rooted triumph and pair them and it works great. fairly easy to do.

also on the n7 open bluetooth and click on  triumph to connect. you'll have to do this everytime you connect, after turning on  bluetooth on both devices

pcpcoleman, what app are using on the Triumph?  I've tried a couple and nothing seems to work for me.  And I have now rooted both the phone and tab so I should be good to go.  The N7 just does not seem to see any wifi that the Triumph is transmitting.  Plus, although the phone and tab show up as being paired on both devices, they won't connect.  Any help?  Thanks,

I'm not using any special  'app' . I am not using wifi, I am getting 3G internet from the triumph bluetooth to N7  bluetooth. Turn wifi off on N7 and turn bluetooth on, pair the two, then open bluetooth on N7 and click Triump. I just did it to verify and it does work. I have no wifi where I am at right now and I have do have internet on the N7. Let me know if you need any other help.

Ah rats!  I've tried a bunch of times but they still won't connect.  I've paired and 'unpaired' and they show up on both devices.  I've turned off wi-fi on both devices.  But the Triumph says 'paired but not connected' under the Nexus 7 name.  I tend to think it's something with the Triumph but not sure.  And not sure what to try next...

I use FoxFi with my T-Mobile galaxy galaxyS2. Trick is to use anything that gives you a WiFi host on your phone. Some apps work where others do not on some phones and the new Open Garden is awesome but only works for browser specifically (they say Firefox with add-on soo far) they are working to improve that but for now it doesn't allow full internet access device wide.

Thing is unlike WiFi where it is connect and go Bluetooth requires you to pair but once paired to use software to create essentially a VPN connection over the Bluetooth connection so it knows you want internet traffic and not just standard Bluetooth features like file transfers between devices.  Check out PDA Net tablet for that (FoxFi can do both WiFi and Bluetooth but PDA net is a little easier and works with FoxFi if you choose WiFi connection option btw but is not needed if WiFi is your connection just start FoxFi then connect tablet to the wireless network you setup in FoxFi).

FoxFi is awesome cause it DOES NOT REQUIRE ROOT.

FOR IPAD USERS: SEE PDA NET TABLET IT HAS AN IPAD CONNECTION OPTION (I can't test cause I don't like to compute with fruit I am an Android all the way :) )

see my post right above this you need to create a VPN over Bluetooth after pairing for internet access. Try using PDA Net Tablet. Bluetooth is harder than WiFi to get going fully I highly suggest you use the WiFi host route instead. Even after I got VPN over Bluetooth only browser would browser internet all other apps saw device as offline.

FoxFi really saved my ass

Thanks pariah, I'll check that out.  I'd prefer to go the wi-fi route but not sure if my VM Triumph will go that way.  Will try a few things and report back.

Excellent!  Got the BT working with Foxfi.  I tried wi-fi first and it said it wasn't available on this device (Moto Triumph) so I tried BT again and Voila! Connected.  Tnx rp!
btw, it told me max speed was 650 or so...
