At 2:20 EDT it just appeared all on its own on my stock N7. Under 10 minutes to install.

I had manually checked around 6AM this morning without success.

Thanks to Google for landscape mode.  I'll still keep the Rotate app, but if I hadn't already paid for it already, who knows?

Well, make that partial success.  Conversion and playback from the DVD worked fine when the chapters/episodes on the DVD all can be played from the first level menu.  Another DVD where the content is played from separate sub-menus could only be ripped at the first chapter in each sub menu.  As far as I can tell this is a limitation of WinX DVD Ripper Platinum v 5.1 and not the Nexus 7 or MX Player.

Success!  Thanks JayJ.   An MP4 conversion of a commercial DVD through WinX DVD Ripper took about 90% of playing time using the "high quality engine".  An hour on the source makes about 600 MB for the file. Copying to the N7 Movies folder and then launching MX Player worked perfectly.  There's still some refining to do. I'm off-line until  Monday but will check back then.

Could someone give me some pointers on getting a playable file onto the N7 from a legally owned DVD? I'm a total noob on video.  The goal is create playable file(s) for transfer to the N7 so they can be played when it has no network connection.  I have Digiarty's WinX DVD Ripper Platinum v 5.1 (not the current version) on a Win7Pro 64 bit PC.  It can output to AVI, MP4, MPEG, WMV and FLV.  There are options for video quality, frame rate, resolution, etc.  MX player and the ARM v7 CODEC were installed on the N7 From the suggestions on Shinhing's thread on personal video.

Can this be done?  What would be the best choices for format and resolution?

Sorry to hear about the need for a factory reset.  I found some of the CN threads with Alvin and you.  Much reading to be done...  in the rain of Stellafane.  Using the N7 for that reading lets me stay on topic ;-)

I haven't been to TSP but a friend is heading to Okie-Tex in Sept.  I'm only 2 years back into Astronomy after years away.

Hi Birdastro,
Cool!  If you have any tips I'd love to hear them. I need to work out a red filter for the N7. I'm BGeoghegan on CN. Any chance you're heading to Stellafane this weekend?
Best,

Thanks for the advice.  I _would_ have a hard time living with the Nook instead of the N7.  Fortunately for me my wife likes e books on the Nook and it also has a lot of games for our 6 y.o. girl.  It's good to a diversity of not too expensive devices for different users and uses.

Hey Everyone,
The Nexus 7 is my 3rd Android device.  I went for the 16 GB version in order to run the SkySafari Pro astronomy app.  That takes up 1.3GB the 8 GB N7 wasn't an option.  My wife's Nook Color proved the form factor to me, but of course I wanted a real Android tablet with better hardware. 10 days in I have no complaints except the vertical only home screens.  I'm not sure if I'll wait for a Google fix or get some rotation software.  Android started for me with a Droid 2 and my current phone is a Droid 4.

My portable history goes back to a Palm IIIx, with its monochrome 160x160 screen and 8 MB (yes, megabytes, year = 2000).  IIRC the price was the same as the N7 16 GB. Then a Sony Clie with 320x320 color followed by Moto Q and Samsung Saga Windows phones.

I'm in IT with a small company in the Northeast US. It's good to have a growing community here,
Bob G
