Nexus 7 Help / Re: Bizzare Glitch - Any Ideas Why?
« on: August 15, 2012, 04:14:58 PM »
Perhaps the rotation sensors are playing a part in the issue as well? If the device is constantly trying to figure out what orientation it is in, it could mess with the app. Seems like laying flat would be likely to trigger the sensors with very minute movements. Just a thought.

Nexus 7 Accessories / Re: USB cable & charging question.
« on: August 14, 2012, 10:27:58 PM »
My reply was only based on electrical knowledge. Electronics are in a league all of their own. The "ten watt" charger may consume ten watts in total but it's the amperage output that you should look at to be certain. Two amps is necessary. Typically the wattage spec is only indicative of the power consumption, not the output. Amps x volts = watts. Chances are the wattage is determined by the input current, or in other words, the outlet it is plugged into. The chargers are basically transformers. They change your house voltage into a lower voltage. Otherwise you would have yourself a very expensive and short lived toaster. Always read the output specs on a charger to be sure of the amperage rating.

Hope this helps !

Nexus 7 Accessories / Re: USB cable & charging question.

There are a lot of variables here. First of all, the OEM charger will provide enough amperage to the device, which is two amps.

Some USB cables are either "energy saving" or, just plain crap. Thin internal wires can't deliver the amperage in doses that are conducive to charging. You may noice that the oem cabe is thicker than the others. Also, length plays a part in charging. The shorter cords have less resistance.

I'm guessing that the macbook has a fairly substantial output as far as the amperage. I'm not up to snuff on my apple device knowledge. It is a fairly logical guess though.

There are a lot of tablets that won't charge via micro USB cords. If they do it can take them days to absorb a charge.

Its all about amperage with the chargers and resistance with the cords. Playing around with the combos can yield some good knowledge as far as effective charging configurations, which you seem to have discovered already.

Nexus 7 Help / Re: Re: Voice search whacky
« on: August 14, 2012, 08:22:40 PM »
I have had my Nexus 7 for a couple of days. Today it started getting whacky. If I do a voice search.."What is the temperature?" The card will come up for a brief second (1/5 of a second) and go back to main screen.

In fact if I ask any question. Such as "Map of Chicago." The map comes up for a brief second and  back to main screen it goes.

It worked fine yesterday. Am I missing something?
Have you tried clearing cache or data?

Nexus 7 Google Play Account Discussions / Re: How to manage 2 Nexus 7s?
« on: August 14, 2012, 08:12:55 PM »
You may want to create a new account for the new tablet. It's the best way to ensure that you receive any applicable play store credits and free content.

After confirming whether or not you received the credit, then you can add any existing account to the tablet and switch between them freely.

Double check the fine print regarding the $25 credit and such to be sure in any event.

Also, last time I checked, you cannot link or merge gmail accounts. You can have multiple accounts on one device.

New Member Introductions / Re: Re: Installing R and Hello
« on: August 14, 2012, 08:05:05 PM »
I am a new member. My Nexus 7 should be delivered next week. I am looking forward to many applications. One in particular is Installing R. Anyone with experience? Success? Failure? Caveats?
Although I barely understand what the heck R even is, all I can say is that you have your work cut out for you. The N7 and jelly bean are so new, you are probably going to be among the first to even attempt it. Keep a sharp eye out for others that speak your language. I'm sure that working with others on this could lead to some cutting edge innovations in the android world! Best of luck!

tsruggles, what's the phone do and what's the green and black spiral about??

radio
The phone is Google voice. It lets me text from the tablet on my gv number. I also use gv as my voicemail provider. The spiral is the nvidia tegra zone app. You can find games built for the tegra 3 processor.

Nexus 7 Help / Re: Beautiful Widget
« on: July 26, 2012, 08:31:54 PM »
From the home screen click on the white circle with six dots. This is your app launcher. From there click on the widget tab on the top of the page. Find the widget you want, long press it and drop it on the home screen of your choosing. This is a functionality of Android 4.0 and up on all devices. Of course some manufacturers have an enhanced ui that adds the home screen long press feature back in.

Nexus 7 Audio/Video / Re: Headphones only playing into left ear
« on: July 22, 2012, 05:21:11 AM »
I had that problem too. If the headphones have a mic on them, they won't line up properly. If the plug on the headphones has 2 black rings, they won't work. If there is only one ring, you should be fine. It's a strange issue in that any devices I've ever owned, the two are usually interchangeable. I just used this as an excuse to buy some Bluetooth ear buds!

:EDIT: Perhaps I meant three black rings. In any event, if h they have a Mic or any inline device like play/pause buttons, they don't seem to work.

Nexus 7 Polls / Re: Where Did You (or plan to) Order Your Nexus 7?
« on: July 14, 2012, 04:12:13 PM »
Ordered from Google play. Just went to Sam's Club today and bought it. My card doesn't have the funds for the pre-order now. I couldn't wait. I'm a crackhead.

Nexus 7 Accessories / Re: Best Cover For Nexus7
« on: July 14, 2012, 04:08:34 PM »
I haven't made a selection yet, but I've noticed that quite a few are appearing on Amazon/eBay. I'm looking for a few things in a case:
* A decent stand built into it, so the Nexus can safely sit in landscape or portrait mode. Book-reading will account for at least 50% of my usage, so I need it to be able to sit by itself at a decent viewing angle.
* One piece preferred. My girlfriend has a one piece Belkin case for her Acer Iconia that I like; it's a wrap-around cover that also has doubles as a stand.

I like the price and look of this cover:
http://www.amazon.com/rooCASE-Multi-Angle-Google-Tablet-Automatically/dp/B008F05Q2E/ref=sr_1_1?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1342279461&sr=1-1&keywords=nexus+7+roo+case
However, it doesn't appear to support portrait mode stand support. That's not as important as landscape stand support to me , as I generally find it a bit more comfortable to read in landscape mode on her Acer (though I guess that orientation might break atypical formatting in a book with meaningful spaces/images/paragraphing/etc.)

You will sadly disappointed. The n7 will only do landscape mode with videos. Even the YouTube app won't shift to landscape until the video starts.

Nexus 7 Audio/Video / Re: Re: HDMI Output
« on: July 10, 2012, 09:41:03 PM »
Reading the various forums on this issue reveals massive confusion by almost everybody.

My take on this is as follows:  Android itself supports the function, as other devices have HDMI output, one way or another.  What is probably missing is just a driver to support it.  If that is indeed the case, then a rooted N7 will have the ability, with the proper software installed and a USB to HDMI converter.

Is that a good guess?

If you read what I read (see my previous post) it seems that the issue is deeper than just software and an external converter. Does this forum allow links to other forms? If not, just read my last posting.

I know there is map cache on Google maps for a 10 mile area...

I am hoping for a greater area then that.  Only 10 miles makes it almost worthless.

The version of maps included with the tablet well store maps offline. I'm not sure exactly what it translates to as far as area, but I saved a map that stretches from Biddeford to Waterville Maine. That's probably just under 100 miles.

I thought when I did it in Google maps, it said 10 mile area.  But it may just depend on what you have available in your cache.  There are apps for caching maps that probably offer more.

I have a jelly bean Rom on my Galaxy Nexus. I don't think any other Rom can get the features of the latest maps version. I could be wrong. I just know that when I saved the map it was about 80mb (or whatever the maximum size limit was) and it took a really really long time to download via Wi-Fi. I believe that there is a video from I/O showcasing the new feature in maps.
