Its a bad app. Go into the change font part of the kindle app and the brightness setting is at the bottom. It does need auto brightness to be off though. 23

After re-flashing with the stock 4.2.1 rom, the ota updater didn't show any update available but the download worked.

The best thing is to Disable them from Apps in settings, this way the apps are still there and the update will take.Not sure what apps, as they're not there anymore. Gtalk, pinyin keyboard, currents, and other Google apps I never use.
