Nexus 7 Root, Hacks, Mods And Development / Re: Re: Rooted, now what?
« on: August 15, 2012, 11:00:16 AM »
Wow norcal, sounds like you've really done some research!  I have yet to learn about custom roms and not sure I have the intestinal fortitude to go forward with that even if I did know which one to use  :-\
I think Titanium Backup is a worthwhile app, you might check it out.  Good luck on your quest and keep us posted please.

I'll definitely give titanium back up a spin. Once I was able to know exactly how to flash a new ROM it was a piece of cake. But getting to that point took hours upon hours of reading and some trial and error. Luckily the first thing I did after rooting was install cwm and do a clean back up. I had to utilize the back up more than once during my learning process and it worked lime a charm!

After many hours of research and experimenting I have officially flashed my first custom ROM. I decided to go with paranoid android. Its bases off cyanogen 10 and shares many of its features. The thing that I love most about it is that you can configure the nex 7 into a true tablet UI. With this ROM I can also configure each app into either tablet, phablet, or phone UI. I'm still curious as to which root only apps I should download though. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Nexus 7 Root, Hacks, Mods And Development / Rooted, now what?
« on: August 14, 2012, 09:45:03 PM »
I took the leap and rooted my nex 7. The first thing I did after setting everything up was a clean cwd back up. I'm new to android and this is my first rooted device. I did a search here for suggestions on what apps and/or Roms/kernels to play with after rooting but didn't really turn anything up. Just looking for suggestions as to what apps, file managers, Roms and the like I should start out with.

Im still on the fence weather to root or not to root. My main reason for rooting would be to expand space for more apps on my 8gb nex7 via stick mount. If this isn't possible I definitely  will not root. Bird, please keep posted on your progress in this matter. If you achieve thus feat please let me know via this thread. Thnxs

Nexus 7 Help / Re: Task killer - Bad. What about cache cleaner.
« on: August 13, 2012, 12:48:33 AM »
Generally with a larger internal memory space our N7 shouldn't suffer with lag like low end devices do, cleaning the cache will help speed up a device by recovering some of the used memory.
Cleaning the cache will do no harm though so you can if you so desire.
Thank you for the info!

Nexus 7 Apps / Re: Favorite Keyboard App?
« on: August 12, 2012, 11:56:18 PM »
My favorite so far is touch pal keyboard. I tried swift key 3 for a while and didn't really like the fact that the predicted text and spell correct didn't  work while doing web searches. Touch pal has great features,  is simple and best of all its free !

Its OK to use either but with android 4.1 it isn't necessary.
Thanks :-)

Nexus 7 Help / Task killer - Bad. What about cache cleaner.

When I first started using my nex7 I installed and was using es task killer, that is until I read that this is generally a no no with android. My question- is it OK to use the cache clearing option in es? If so when and how often.

Nexus 7 Help / Re: How to remove rubbish files?
« on: August 12, 2012, 11:26:59 AM »
I don't understand why it is that when I remove an app why don't all of the files/folders associated with it get removed too. I have a jailbroken iOS device with ifile and when removing apps on it all files /folders go too. I plan on rooting my n7 today or tomorrow. Hope you guys can give some pointers on keeping my tablet free of garbage once i do.

Norcal, are you rooted?  I uninstalled the apps, used root manager, searched (from root) for "slot" and "safari," selected what I didn't want, and deleted the rubbish.
I'm not rooted but plan to be in the near future. This is my first experience with android,  having been a long time iOS user. I kinda wanna get the feel of this os before rooting.

It's more complicated than that.  Uninstalling from the app menu often leaves directories and files, often at lower (nearer root) levels invisible to the unrooted user.

See the following screen captures.  One shows the lower level junk left by a slot machine program, all below the visible level of the unrooted user.  The other two show what was left after uninstalling an astronomy program (sky safari).  The ./sdcard path is visible to the unrooted user.  The other path isn't.  Both contained three additional directories with additional contents.
Does this mean that as an unrooted user I am forever stuck with all of these junk folders when uninstalling apps? I know for a fact that while I was browsing through settings I came to an option in my n7 for deleting rubbish files. Now I can't find it. I did have go ex launcher installed for a short time so it's possible that the setting was within that launcher.

To delete the app "short cut", long press on icon and drag to "remove" on top of screen.

To remove entire app, go to settings, apps, press on app name and then uninstall.

I know how to delete app shortcuts and apps. My question is how do I clean out rubbish files and folders. I found a simple option allowing me to do that and I cannot remember how to access this option.

Nexus 7 Help / How to remove rubbish files?
« on: August 11, 2012, 09:19:39 PM »
I've been working with the nexus 7 for about two weeks. I'm new to android and still in the process of learning. Back when I first got my N7 I had found an option to remove rubbish files. I selected the option and the Tablet responded that there were no such files at that time. Now that I have installed and uninstalled several apps I would like to run this option again. Only problem is I cannot remember where I found the option. Can someone please direct me?  :)

Nexus 7 Help / Flash on N7?
« on: August 04, 2012, 01:19:48 AM »
I just received my nexus 7 in the mail today. I'm curious on what I need to do in order to view flash video online. From what I've read in the play store it says that adobe flash doesn't support Jelly Bean. I found a website with instructions but it says I need root permission in order to move a certain downloaded file into /system/apps folder. I downloaded the app and figured out where to move it but the tablet will not allow me to move the app out of the download folder. Does my tablet need to be rooted for me to obtain root permission? Sorry if this is a dumb question. I'm. A long time ios user and android is all new to me.
