Awesome!  I'll wait until a few reviews are posted just to very it fits the N7, but what a great price at $9.  It also seems to be a wallet replacement, though I'm not sure I'd use all the slots and pockets.

The Lounge: Off Topic Forum / Re: downloading movie
« on: July 09, 2012, 03:41:50 PM »
I agree with Babyfacemagee and others, streaming is definitely the way to go if you have an Internet connection.  If not Google Play can download the content to your device for offline viewing (more info).  If Amazon Instant Video works on the N7 it can also download content to your device for offline viewing, which will be one of the first things I plan on testing with my N7 since many of our kids programs are from Amazon Instant Video.

Another option for streaming that I'm looking at is getting a Slingbox for our DishNetwork cable box.  Dish calls it TVAnywhere, but it uses the Slingbox technology.  This is basically a device that connects to your cable box and streams the content to your device via the Internet from anywhere.  If you can watch it on your TV you can watch it on your device.  The clients are available in Google Play, and for Dish subscriber the device is only like $40 with no monthly fee.  I'm not sure how much it costs for other providers, but I know most offer similar services.

Nexus 7 Audio/Video / Re: HDMI Output
« on: July 09, 2012, 03:31:07 PM »
The four gold dots are pogo pins and are not capable of outputting video. I called Google and at first the rep told me that it would put video out via a micro usb to hdmi cable. I asked him to verify this and he went to actually test this on a tablet. He came back and had been told to tell me that this capability was not supported. He said that if it did work, the device was not designed to do so. I suspect they want to sell their Q.

That's what I'm thinking, they didn't add it in hopes that the Q would sell, but honestly I doubt most people would spend $299 so they could output video from a $199 device.  I hope someone adds this to a dock or something else, even if it's not Google sanctioned, because video out is the one thing keeping me from calling the N7 perfect.  I mean heck it's just one more connector on the motherboard...  Maybe someone will find a way to add it since Android supports it natively.

Nexus 7 Apps / Any app developers here?
« on: July 09, 2012, 03:28:11 PM »
I'm a developer by trait, but it's all in the world of Microsoft (yeah I know ... oxymoron much?), but I REALLY want to get into app development on Android.  I did some playing around with it a couple of years ago, but nothing concrete ever came from it.

So any app developers looking to code for the N7 or Jelly Bean specifically?  I haven't looked at the new API to see what's new in 4.1, but from what I hear there's some neat new toys with this latest version.

Nexus 7 Apps / Re: Nexus 7 Apps You're Most Looking Forward To Using
« on: July 09, 2012, 03:26:31 PM »
I don't know of any apps I'd use on the N7 that I'm not already using, most of what I use I was able to side-load on my Kindle Fire, but given the lack of microphone and camera there are some that just won't work.  But here are the apps I plan on using:

- Skype and Google Hangout for video/audio chat
- Doggcatcher for audio and video podcasts
- TuneIn Radio for streaming audio
- Ustream to live stream content from the N7
- Netflix
- Google Plus (of course)
- Google Maps with cached maps and GPS (nice to have larger screen)
- Echolink for ham radio chatter
- Pluralsight for various training videos (paid subscription through work)
- Amazon Kindle app and Amazon Prime app (hopefully they work)
- Various news and magazine apps

And since the N7 doesn't ship with any type of camera software I'll see if I can sideload the Camera and Camcorder app from my DroidX.  Though it's only a front facing camera hopefully I can take pics with it while around the house.

So nothing too ground breaking, but it'll be nice being able to access the Google store directly instead of having to side load everything as I do now with the Fire.

Nexus 7 Ordering and Shipping / Re: Ship Date?
« on: July 09, 2012, 03:18:09 PM »
I called Google this morning to ask about changing my pre-order from an 8 GB model to 16 GB.  The guy I talked to looked up my 6/29 pre-order date, and said he can't change my order, because it's too close to the ship date, and I'd lose my position in the queue.  He said I could make another pre-order, and refuse delivery of my existing pre-order.

This hints that N7 shipping is imminent.

Thanks for the update, I never thought to call Google directly.  I'm hearing July 12th still on various other forums, which is just 3 days away, so hopefully we'll start getting emails soon enough with tracking numbers.

Nexus 7 Polls / Re: Do You Plan On Rooting Your Nexus 7?
« on: July 09, 2012, 03:13:51 PM »
Interesting results...  The fear of bricking my devices is what keeps me away from rooting them, so I'll probably keep the N7 stock for the most part.  Besides from what I see most people root their devices to use the stock version of Android, which this will have outta the gate, so what advantage is there in rooting it?

Now if HDMI support can be added through the docking pins that may be a reason to root...  That's the one feature the N7 lacks that I really wish they had added.

Thanks :)

Also sorry for the delay in replying, been on vacation with the family for the last few days.   I'm excited to help out in whatever way I can, and I'm looking forward to posting and sharing as much as I can once Google finally ships the N7, which I've had on order since the week they were announced.

Some background on me, I'm a total nerd going back to the BBS days in the late 80's.  I'm also a Linux fanatic moving my primary system to Linux in 2000 with alittle OSX mixed in.  As for Android I've used a DroidX phone for two years now and have had the Kindle Fire for almost a year.  From using the Fire I'm anxious to get the N7 because the Fire is great, but it's just lacking too many things to really do what I want.

So that's me :)   I might not post too much until the N7 makes it to my door, but after that I look forward to posting everything I learn and answering questions along the way.  Also I really want to get into Android development, so that should be another fun facet.

Take care --

Yup keyboard and mouse support are amazing capabilities, and I'll definitely use both.  The mouse feature though just totally amazed me since I've never seen a tablet support a mouse before and given I remote desktop into my work fairly often this just seems like a great fit (given I can get VPN to work as well).

And I did see your post about the audio dock for the N7, so definitely I'll be experimenting with this too and will share what I find.  Since the Kindle Fire is really my only tablet for now I connect it to our home stereo using the headphone jack which isn't the best. Having audio through the USB port will be great, or even Bluetooth audio which would be a neat perk.

Some neat things coming with the N7, I just can't wait until it's finally in my hands to play with :)

Nexus 7 General Discussion / Re: Favorite OnLine TV/Movie Source
« on: July 05, 2012, 10:54:23 AM »
Netflix here, and we also buy content from Amazon Prime which I hope will work with the N7.  Other sources are Youtube, uStream, and various video podcasts which I use Doggcatcher to aggregate on my Android devices.

Nexus 7 Wallpapers and Themes / Live wallpaper on N7
« on: July 05, 2012, 10:49:44 AM »
Anyone know if live wallpaper will work the same on 4.1 and the N7 as it does on older Android devices?

192
I use Google Music to get most of my music on my DroidX, so I'll do the same with the N7.  As for other stuff, Google Drive is working quite well for me.

The only blah is not having access to this information when disconnected from the network, but if it becomes a big enough hassle I'll get the hotspot capabilities added to my phone so I can use the N7 anywhere.

The HDMI out was the biggest bummer for me, plus having a rear facing camera would've been nice.  Other then these I'm happy with it.  Even if it had a 3G/4G radio on board I'd probably not use it.  Also I got the 16 Gig model, so I'm betting that's enough storage for me.

But for $199 it definitely blows away the Kindle Fire which is what I'm using now.

Can anyone confirm whether or not making calls via Google Voice will work on the N7?  I'd love to have the N7 work just as my DroidX does except use Google Voice instead.  This would be amazing if so.

Firstly here's a link to the Nexus 7 Manual through Google Play:
https://play.google.com/store/books/details?id=gKmQD47OvCYC

And after reading through it there are a few features I've yet to see anyone demo or highlight, and I'm not sure why.

The biggest is Google Actions (pages 34 and 35 in manual) which says the N7 will sample audio from the microphone every few seconds and if you say "Google" it'll instantly start listening to voice commands with no need to press the microphone button.  This seems amazing, and if the API allows third party apps to tie into this it opens some neat possibilities.  But I've yet to see anyone talk about it or show any demos.

Also pages 59 and 60 shows using a VPN, so any word on how this works?  If it's compatible with our work's VPN this might be a great way to connect in when on the go given I can find a good RDP client for Android.

Speaking of, page 67 and 68 mention mouse and keyboard support, which a mouse working on it is something very unexpected.  But the manual says "an arrow shaped cursor appears just as on a computer".  WOW!  Again, for RDP connections into desktop systems this is TOTALLY FTW!

Pages 80 and 81 mentions encryption which is another wonderful feature I've yet to see anyone demo, so I'd be curious to see how this works and whether or not it slows the system down.

So just a few things I've read that I've yet to see anyone who already has one cover.  Most people seem to be highlighting the obvious things, but I'd love to see someone demo these features.  I also have an N7 on order, so if I can't find any demos by then I'll do one myself :)

Take care --
