Problems logging on in cafe
« on: October 26, 2012, 08:12:05 PM »
I have had problems logging onto the internet in cafes.
The Nexus will not consistently show the redirected password web page which MUST be passed to log on.
I have found no information on this problem at all.

Did you try forgetting or deleting the hot spot connection that you are having trouble with in wifi settings and retry?

I have tried that several times, with no results at all.
As I have said the redirected log on page, that is needed, almost never appears.
At times I have been able to log on, but the redirected page will not consistently appear.

It's a browser issue. I have 3 browsers, and I have to check all 3 for the redirected web page, reloading whatever page is open in each browser. If all 3 fail to have the redirected web page, then I have to try to open a new web page in each browser, until I get the redirected web page. I have always found it/them.

Try to bookmark the push page once you do find it.
Some servers have problems with android.

I agree it being a browser issue. I keep 3 on hand just in case. What shows up when you bypass the splash page? Just a generic cannot connect to the Internet page?

At San Francisco Airport (SFO) I had the same problem.  There is free WiFi for navigating around the airport (which I easily connected to), but if you want internet access you have to get to another login page.  I was unable to get to that page.  I tried about 15 times, using either Chrome or Firefox.

This may give some info on the issue.

http://code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=8030

Be nice to have a list of generic log in addresses for various web servers. Numeric, not domain name.

Try typing in index.HTML, it might redirect to log in.

Or go find the IT guy and nag at him. They love to be interrupted to do PR on the problem they were working on. Taste of iron in my mouth.

I have found that the Chrome browser help section will display the direction to
unloaded redirected sign in page. It is easy to save this information for future use.

I have looked into this further and found that the help section will not work consistently.

I have found a down load app that seems to take care of my problems.
I connected with no errors after I installed the Wi Fi Connection Manager.

What seemed to be the cause of the problem? I go to many places that put me in the situation of getting thru a secured hot spot or Internet connection SPLASH page. I have never had this issue. Why do you need a special app? Who was the provider that was giving you the problem? Was it just the Nexus or have you been to this same area with another device?

Thanks, but this doesn't address the OP's issue.  We don't have problems establishing connections.  What we're discussing is finding the consent acknowledgement redirection page that confronts us in cafes, motels, college campuses, and other public sites.

Hmm.  I try to keep an open mind.  Maybe this will do it?  I can't grasp how the app can know which sites ask for consenting to terms, which ask for user ids and passwords, etc.  It might save the data, but I deal with similar but not identical splash screens at different Rodeway Inns, campuses of the same college, and different facilities of the same HMO.

Maybe on the web servers you have accessed they have patched so that the android internal domain name resolution problem is fixed. There's a link above to the issue but it's a bit technical. I was hoping an IT expert could explain it so that even my tiny little brain could understand.
In the meantime seems to be an app for that.

It seems that android wants the full domain.page address while other operating systems will accept just the .page when already connected to domain. Or something like that. So patching a webserver like apache might mean recoding all short names to full version or using xxx.xx.xx actual addresses. Sorta.
