Streaming my n7 onto my tv

<< < (2/3) > >>

Bigtroutz:
My understanding is that the N7 is missing internals needed for a wired HDMI connection regardless of which cable converters you try.

From what I read, it seems that the best solution is to use the N7 as the wireless or bluetooth connected remote control of a server application running on a laptop, PC, HTPC, whatever that actually does the connecting to the TV.  You may try to add wireless streaming from a server set up on your N7 but the sad fact is that your server's actual storage capacity is very limited.   At any rate, you will still need a device to pass the actual stream to the TV unless your TV has a wireless connection to your network the media server can see.

Tomorrow I get one of these to experiment with.

I will start with a XBMC server on my PC sending the stream to the Kdlinks with the N7 as the remote control. Feel free to watch someplace here for the results in a couple of days as I discover what works and what doesn't.

edit:
Apparently you need to add so much stuff to the (hard to get) Raspberry Pi that it ends up in the same price range as the linked device from earlier in this post.

Thanks Trouts. My media player seems comparible to the one you linked. You can also telnet into and play with the coding of the media player. I wish I knew more programming and I could help there.

Anyways please keep me posted

Bigtroutz:
So far I have upgraded the firmware, attached a USB hard drive and several flash drive to my media appliance.  Works great on all tested file types and the new firmware loaded like eating pie.  Somehow it knows how to turn on my TV and set the proper HDMI port when I start it up -- impressive.  Picture quality is pretty good...still learning how to toggle the settings properly....  more later

Update:
Changed the TV Out settings and picture quality is now 1st rate.

Got this Nexus 7 app and it works great - sees the media player via WiFi -->LAN -->Cable to KDlinks and streams it's available content to the TV - impressive.  My only complaint is only the connections/shortcuts they provide are available. Trying to discover if one can add more.

I just discovered this:
http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/42491/how-to-remote-view-and-control-your-android-phone/

Using java you can view the screen of your Nexus 7 on your computer.  Make sure you have the adb drivers installed, and usb debugging on.

I figure that I can hook my N7 into my laptop, and connect my laptop to my TV via HDMI.

However, the problems. At least on my Windows XP laptop (7 years old... it's my work computer), this is extremely slow and laggy, not usable for games. It also seems like sound is not piped through. It uses the micro-usb port to connect to the port of the laptop, so I cannot connect my xbox controller via the otg cable (this would be ok if bluetooth worked properly).

I will try this method on my Windows 7 corei7, 8GB RAM laptop at home and see if it's a bit faster.

But at least I got video to pipe over!

I've been reading about setting up your N7 as a VNC server, but you need to root to do that. And I haven't rooted yet, but there are a lot of VNC apps on google play...

*EDIT*
Ah apparently this androidscreencast has:
- Slow refresh rate (about 4-5 fps)

Dang. Though perhaps a better one is here: http://blogjakes.com/android-screencast-tools/ (Nope! Tested, all super slow. Will test at home on my Windows 7 machine, but I have a feeling it is just slow.)

This one is MUCH better: http://www.mightypocket.com/2010/09/installing-android-screenshots-screen-capture-screen-cast-for-windows/
Since it has a full screen mode (which looks awesome), but it's still a very low fps and isn't usable to movies or games.

Also, using adbWireless app you can connect your N7 to your computer wirelessly, but again for rooted users only.

Bigtroutz:
besides the iMediaShare, I tested BubbleUPnP.  Works well as far as N7 and local area network file streaming to the KDlinks, which it sees among the list of DLNA 'renderers'.  So far it appears to work the same as iMediaShare.

Also looked at & tested a bunch of duds but no point in adding those here.
