Nexus 7 General Discussion / What is your Nexus' name?
« on: March 16, 2013, 03:59:32 PM »
I've seen several people hear refer to thier nexus by name. One called hers "tabby".

I call mine "Sven" (as in seven).

Any other geeks name their tablets?

That HTC droid DNA looks pretty sweet... of course, I'm 21 months away from an upgrade anyway, so me and my razr m are gonna be together for a while.

AOL still exists? What possible function does it serve now?

I have to do the same for my parents. There needs to be a simplified launcher.

There is. It's called a kindle fire. Swap it for one of those, as caveman could use it.

Don't get me wrong, nexus is better... but for technophobes kindle is way simpler.

Nexus 7 Vs. The Competition / Re: Nexus vs Smart Phone
« on: December 30, 2012, 09:28:08 PM »
I currently have a Motorola razr m, and a nexus 7. I have the same dilemma... I use my nexus a lot to read and whatnot, and I do carry out around a lot, but the more I use the phone, the more comfortable I am reading and whatnot in it.

Next time around, I may get a bigger phone (something along the GSIII or galaxy note) and see if it works for me by itself. If I decide I still need a tablet, I would probably go 10".

Nexus 7 Accessories / Re: Review of Cases for Nexus 7

That's the same case I have.  Do the magnets hold it closed on yours?  Mine doesn't.  Wish I had gotten elastic.

'Accessories' Member Reviews / Review of my new portenzo bookcase
« on: December 21, 2012, 03:53:39 PM »
I ordered myself a case from portenzo,  the book case line.

First... this is a beautiful case.  It feels just a hardbound book.  You can choose between a variety of colors for the outside and the inside.  The outer cover is buckram (like a library book) and the inside is linen.

The nexus is held in a carved wooden bed,  with some foam in the corners to hold it snug.  It fits perfectly with no movement. All ports and button are accesable.  The auto sleep and wake magnet works great.

Now, the options...

You can choose to have the case heels shut with magnets, an weekend band, or both.  Go with the elastic.  The magnets don't work,  and costs extra. I went with magnets alone,  and wish I had gotten elastic.

Get the intellistand.  It let's you prop the case open in a couple of positions,  with the magnets holding it in place. Worth the upcharge.

You can also have the case embossed in gold.

Beautiful case,  with the money.

I'm reading the Wheel Of Time series,  By Robert Jordan.  Since I am still annoyed With Amazon over my experience with the Kindle fire HD,  I bought these books from the google play store.  I actually like the play books app better than the Kindle app.

I just ordered the Portenzo http://shop.portenzo.com/nexus book case. I'm excited about it. Looks like a very beautiful, functional case. I REALLY wanted the cool old map leather bound one, but I can't spend $150 on a case for a $200 device... that would be stupid.

Can I ask what is probably a stupid question? This case has the sleep on/off magnet, as well as "strong magnets that hold the cover closed".

Is it a potential problem to have several strong magnets so close to a computer? Could that not cause data loss or something?

It works with Google maps that way doesn't it?

Nexus 7 Apps / Re: Why no Itunes app on play yet?
« on: December 02, 2012, 07:25:33 PM »
Because Apple is evil.

I used to be an apple guy... had a macbook, multiple Ipods...

I finally got tired of paying their luxury brand prices. To be fair, for years, they were head and shoulders above the rest. Android has finally caught, and in some ways surpassed them.

But it was DRM that really hacked me off. I got my first smartphone , an Android (because of price, and lack of a 4g Iphone at the time), and was hacked to find that all the Itunes music I had bought (quite a bit over the last 10 years) will not work on it.

I wrote Apple customer service, and was invited to pay about $500 to upgrade it all to ITunes Plus. I told them to go to hell, and that I would never buy an apple product again. I sold my Ipod the very next day.

I then spent about 4 nights in a row burning all my Itunes music to CD's, and reimporting it. That circumvents the DRM. Have you tried that for your audiobooks?

Nexus 7 General Discussion / Re: How's your Nexus 7 Experience ???

My Grandparents passed many year ago, they'd have no interest in these wonderful tablets. Even my parents have no interest in tablets and smartphones, my Mum has a PC and they both have dumb phones. My in-laws (girlfriends parents) both have dumb phones but they do both have/use a PC, personally I respect those that just want a phone to be a phone and don't want a smartphone because IMO there's nothing wise than somebody that has something they don't use...

I was a dumbphone guy until 2 months ago (I'm only 32, so I'm not old.) I just didn't see that the benefits were worth the cost. Also, it annoyed me to see all the pod people staring into their palm all the time at work on breaks and stuff. I didn't even text, or accept texts. (Yeah, I was that guy.)

Well, now, in 60 days, I have a smartphone and a tablet. I just freaking love these things. I'd be hard pressed to describe exactly WHY they are useful, but I find myself using it for 10 tiny little tasks every day. I'm better organized with my calendar in my pocket. I'll never go back.

Oddly, my parents have had smartphones and tablets for years (they are iCultists sadly). I'm the one late to the party.
