Nexus 7 Apps / Re: Bought BW...no app drawer in menu?
« on: January 06, 2013, 08:43:45 AM »
Whoops!  Never mind.  I figured it out!  8)   I was trying to use the wrong place to select the location for each widget.  I now have 3 weather widgets all lined up, each one with a different location.  Nice.

Another question...probably a dumb one.  ::)   Unless I misread, I should be able to place a weather widget for each weather location I want to see.  In other words, have a east coast, a west coast, a Paris...whatever.   But when I try to "manage locations" in the settings, it won't let me move anything.  Even on just one....I hit the "reorder locations" button, and I can't get anything to change.  Again, I guess I am missing something?

Oh...so they are just placed in the widget section already...okay.  I kept reading threads that said I should tap the home screen and I would get a list of widgets to select from.   That must be for different devices....because all I get when I do that is a wallpaper option.

So..this was just clock and weather widgets then?  Hmmm.  Right now, I'm not seeing what is the big deal, thinking I should have researched more before making my big purchase!   :-X   Learning as I go!!  :)  Thanks!

Okay after all the glowing reviews in the forums....I purchased my first app...Beautiful Widgets. But all I see when I open the icon, is a how-to that tells me that I should open my app drawer and select from there.  I don't see anything in BW that gives me any selection.  What am I doing wrong?

Perhaps it's too small and she would/might like a 10" tablet?

I don't think its the size. I thinks she just doesn't see a need for one or sees a need to be more mobile with a computer. She might just like sitting down with a big ol computer and sees a tablet as an inconvenience. That's how my mom is and I feel your pain, she's technologically challenged.

Yep.  I think I need to figure out how to make it MORE appealing than sitting down at the computer.  I'll just have to spend some more time with her.

I have to do the same for my parents. There needs to be a simplified launcher. Skype with the great grandkids might be the killer app.

Explain that learning new things and puzzle solving help keep the brain healthy. I've dealt with Alzheimers with a relative and worry about my own mental lapses. Make a game of exploring the nex7. One app at a time.

Yep, I have explained that to her...that's why I was disappointed that she gave up so quickly.  I live 30 minutes away, and work full time, so it's not like I can drop by every night to give her another lesson.  :)

Slap some Barbara Streisand films and music on that baby and she'll love it!  Seriously, if it were my 81 year old mother or grandmother I'd load it up with some of her favorite music, pictures of family, grandkids, etc, load up some of her favorite books.  Don't forget an app for her favorite radio station or perhaps a subscription to her favorite magazine...(Threads Magazine or something related to knitting or sewing usually goes over well with 81 year old women).  Whatever her hobbies are, find some apps, magazines, websites...bookmark these sites for her.

Maybe add some short videos of the kids saying hi to her that she can play to remind her of her family.

Demonstrate Skype with the grandkids...that's always a good one as well.

Finally, now Streamline down all the apps to the bare essentials and put an entire family picture on a nice wallpaper for the background.

In otherwords PERSONALIZE THE NEXUS 7 TO HER and presto...it's now her favorite companion!

As far as movies and music, nah...not for her.  She has a perfectly good TV in the den and in the bedroom, so I can't see where she would think that watching movies on a 7" screen would be better.  :D  And she isn't into music, so that wouldn't do anything for her either.

We talked about the larger size, but decided against it as we thought the smaller 7" would be more convenient, and if she ever did get to the point that she decided to take it with her, it would fit in her bag.

Sigh.  I already spend quite a bit of time there helping them with the computer when they get things screwed up.  This is why I was against the tablet...seemed like just another gadget that would require more time on my part.  I am the only sibling in the state, so of course the others are never concerned about how much of MY time these gifts will require.  I'll get with her again this weekend and see if I can do anything else for her on it.  She's not someone with a lot of patience, and frankly I don't get any enjoyment out of being the recipient of her frustration.   I was really hoping she would love it.

OP hasn't really said why she doesn't like it. What exactly has she said ?

Her exact words were " I can't do anything at all with it.  I can't figure out anything."

And that, after we had showed her email, browsing, games...oy.   ::)

Nexus 7 General Discussion / 81 year old mom says take it back. :-(
« on: January 02, 2013, 01:40:42 PM »
We got my mom a Nexus, after much discussion about whether or not she would be able to use it.  I didn't think she would, but my sister was really convinced that it would be a Godsend for our mom, as dad sits on the computer all day long playing games.  I showed her how to open a browser, how to access FB, use the keypad...even downloaded a nice Mahjong ap that she likes.  But she is just over it.  She told me yesterday that she's putting it back in the box.  I don't know that we can return it, my sis bought it out of state, and we don't have that store here locally, even if the WOULD take it back.  I am fairly techy so this stuff seems like 2nd nature to me, but she is not too adept at figuring things out I guess.  She does use a computer, and does fine with that ( I do often have to clean up things and recreate shortcuts and the like).

So, just looking for suggestions here....anyone have ideas as far as how to make it more "senior-friendly"?

Nexus 7 General Discussion / Re: How's your Nexus 7 Experience ???

My Grandparents passed many year ago, they'd have no interest in these wonderful tablets. Even my parents have no interest in tablets and smartphones, my Mum has a PC and they both have dumb phones. My in-laws (girlfriends parents) both have dumb phones but they do both have/use a PC, personally I respect those that just want a phone to be a phone and don't want a smartphone because IMO there's nothing wise than somebody that has something they don't use...

I also don't have a smartphone, and I work in the technology field - I'm a systems analyst.  I deal with email and am online all day long, so the last thing I need or want is to be constantly pinged with emails/texts/whatever, in my off hours.  I'm a busy person, and I just don't see how people have much time for it anyway.  I really don't need it, at least not enough to justify the cost.  I use a phone for conversation, and occasional texts.  I can access the internet if I really need to, via my dumbphone, but it's enough of a chore that I really don't go there unless I need a number or address and have no other option.  Also, the size is a huge issue for me, those smartphones are just far too large to be convenient for me, yet too small to read anything of significance.  I see all the iPhones sticking out of pockets, and people walking around with them in their hands, and running into things.   ::)   Just not my thing, and I can't see paying more for the priviledge, like you said.  It's funny, I have 4 other people on my team at work, and not a one of us uses a smartphone.  :-)

I do like the Nexus 7 though.  I bought a cheapo Dell tablet last year on a Black Friday special, just to see if I would use it.  I loved it.  Very convenient for travel - I used to take my laptop everywhere, now I just take the tablet (unless of course I think I will need to remote in - in those instances I still need my laptop) Occasional wi-fi is fine, and I can access my Evernote notes on it too.  It's a cool little tool.

Nexus 7 Help / Re: How to stop redirect to mobil sites?
« on: December 07, 2012, 04:05:26 PM »
Try Dolphin and Boat browsers they both have settings for Desktop User Agent . For Chrome  tap the 3 dots upper right  and check Request desktop sight.
If you sideload Flash player it will work with Boat .

Great - thanks - I think that might do it.  I had not known about the "Request Desktop Site" and I had googled this everywhere.   ::)

I also have downloaded the Dolphin browser and I will give that a shot.

Many of these mobile sites are almost worthless...I suppose for a smartphone they are okay, but not on a tablet. One would think that the web developers would know this by now.

Nexus 7 Help / How to stop redirect to mobil sites?
« on: December 07, 2012, 12:02:18 PM »
I have been using a Dell Streak for a year, and just got this Nexus 7, and I like it, but it keeps redirecting me to mobile sites.  The Streak never did that.  I am using the default Chrome browser.  Is there a setting somewhere that will stop this annoying redirect?

Nexus 7 Accessories / Re: USB Card Reader
« on: October 12, 2012, 07:09:09 PM »
Just got one of these.
http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B007RVM99U/ref=oh_details_o02_s00_i00
It is cheap (and feels cheap) but works fine as a card reader in conjunction with Nexus Media Importer (Read Only - I guess I would need to 'root' if I wanted write access - but as my main reason for getting it was to view photos on my camera memory cards and carry extra media around that is no big issue)

The link above is to Amazon UK; anyone found a similar device from a US source that works with the N7?

- martyh

You can get the same one from a US. source.
