Nexus 7 Help / Netflix no longer streams - used to work fine?
« on: March 29, 2013, 10:55:13 PM »
I haven't watched Netflix on my tablet in a month or so, but I just tried to watch something last night, and as soon as I hit the little play arrow, I get the big read Netflix screen with the little circle, like it's loading...and then, it goes back to the Netflix browse screen.  No matter what movie or show I try.  I have no problem watching in via my laptop or pc or tv.  Every other device works fine. Anyone else have this happen?

Its a spam not trying to talk to you guys. Gotta be more careful when giving out your email. I wonder if you can just block their user name. Talk is a very nice app.

That email address has not been given to ANYONE, other than what was required to set up the google account.  I don't even use that account for anything else.

Nexus 7 General Discussion / Re: Gift for nephew's new Nexus...books?

Thanks for all that info!  That is a huge help.  I'm going to forward those links to him now.   :)

Thanks!  I came here for something else, but I also noticed the same stupid notifications a couple of days ago and was wondering what the heck was going on. Very timely thread!!   :)

Thanks Matt.  For me personally, it's both a price issue, and a convenience issue.  I like to be able to toss a book down at the beach and not worry about sand.  Or toss it off the bed and not worry about it breaking. Also, I just find it easier to read, using an actual paper book.   Really has nothing to do with being in the 21st century.   I am firmly there.  :)

So there is no problem getting Amazon books to read on the Nexus?  I thought I had read somewhere about a conflict and that the Kindle was needed to read Amazon books.  Maybe that was a while back.

My nephew is getting a Nexus 7 for his 20th birthday.  He will be wanting to use it for reading books.  I've not used my Nexus for this myself.  I mean, I've looked at the books that came with it, but I just prefer real books, so I haven't explored any options for finding books to download.  I would like to get him a gift card to buy/download books to the tablet for reading, but I am unsure what the best provider is.   What do you guys use to download books?  I guess he could use an Amazon gift card?  What about Google Play?  Just looking for the best option.

He said he was using ES File Explorer.  I got this description from the ap store.

"ES File Explorer is a free, full-featured file and application manager.
It functions as all of these apps in one: file manager, application manager, task killer, cloud storage client (compatible with Dropbox, Google Drive, SkyDrive, Box.net, Sugarsync, Yandex, Amazon S3, and Ubuntu One), FTP client, and Samba client.
It provides access to pictures, music, video, documents, and other files on both your Android devices and your computers."

Well, if she can't figure it out,  run on down to Walmart and get her a $300 laptop with Windows 8 on it.

I'm sure she will just fall in love with it...................

Oh sure.  W8 is SO much better than W7.   ;)  (Note extreme sarcasm!)

No. The whole point of the tablet is the small size - so a laptop would not have worked for her.

Besides...it's all good now.  She is enjoying it now that she has become more familiar with it, and the stylus was  big help!

I have to do the same for my parents. There needs to be a simplified launcher.

There is. It's called a kindle fire. Swap it for one of those, as caveman could use it.

Don't get me wrong, nexus is better... but for technophobes kindle is way simpler.

"Swap"?  Right.   ;D  Don't want a Kindle...already researched it...that was why I picked the Nexus.  ::)

Nexus 7 Help / Re: Nexus working since Xmas, now won't connect?
« on: January 10, 2013, 08:35:59 PM »
All fixed.   She had a notification of 4.2 update ready to install...so I let it go.  And it rebooted, and updated...and still no connection.  Did a "Forget" and reconnected...and voila.  Not sure why it dropped or if that update had anything to do with it, but it's fine now.  Thanks everyone.

I would call your Mom and have her disconnect the DSL/WiFi  modem/router from the power source and reconnect and let it train back up and then try to access the internet from the Nexus 7. Many times I find that the DSL modem looses connection to the IPS and a simple reset will restore the connection.

What is the "IPS" that you refer to?  Are you referring to the provider - Verizon DSL?  If that were the case, then her PC would not have a connection either.  That isn't the case (and I should have stated that in my post).  The PC is in fact, connecting to the internet with no issues.  It is just the Nexus that will not connect.

Yes, I did have her check that over the phone.  WiFi is on, and the connection shows as "cancel" or "forget".  So it is still saved.

Nexus 7 Help / Nexus working since Xmas, now won't connect?
« on: January 10, 2013, 10:36:05 AM »
My mom's Nexus has been working fine, and stayed connected, since we set it up for her at Christmas.  Today, she called me and said she can't get connected.  She has DSL, never any problems with the wireless service or router...ever.  I've never had my laptop or table drop a connection there either.  I'm at work, so I can't even troubleshoot it right now, but just thought I'd post the question here and see if anyone had any tips for me to use later.  Guess I will have to go over there after work.  :(

Okay...number ONE thing - I bought her a STYLUS!!  That right there made a huge difference.  She is much better at tapping the right place now.   I didn't realize she was having that much of a problem until I showed her how to use the stylus...she really likes it.  :)

I also bought her a nice bright yellow case, so she doesn't have to be quite so careful with it, and it serves as a stand for her too...much better than trying to hold it up with arthritic hands.

I bought her an app (the Food Network - she loves them) and showed her how to use it and search there.  She will definitely use that.  I also downloaded a couple of free recipe site apps and she likes those too.

I explained Currents to her, and customized it for her.  She is already looking forward to surfing through those pages.   ;D

I downloaded a nice weather widget and set it up for her.

Found some good crossword apps, and a CW solver as well.  We played a couple of games together.   ;)

I also explained the difference between apps and widgets, the 5 screens, how to move icons around, and how to bookmark sites.  And when she asked (because I would not have gone there without her asking!!) I explained the difference between her PC (Windows 7) an iPad (IOS) and her tablet (Android/Jellybean).

I didn't want to go further and overwhelm her....but I think she might keep it now.  We'll do a little more as she gets more confident with it.

Oh, and I also showed her the App Store...and how to search there, and find free vs. paid...and check the reviews...not sure if she would try one yet on her own, but we'll get there.

Glad you sorted it... just so you know the feature you mentioned about long-pressing the homescreen is an old Android feature, pre Ice Cream Sandwich [Android 4.0.x) unless you use a 3rd party launcher like Apex or Nova...

Sent from my Nexus 4

Ah. Thanks.  I didn't realize they were talking about an older version.  Go figure.  I did see some threads that mentioned app launchers...I don't think I need to worry about that...I'm having enough of a time just learning to use what I've got!! :D
