I have my nexus 7 pattern-locked.
1. When at power up the lock screen appears, for a brief second an empty square outline partly appears on the top left of the screen and then disappears before I have a chance to do anything with it. Just the right edge appears. What is that?
2. Is there any way to modify the locked screen? Like adding widgets or rearranging things?
Thanks.

Thanks for replying. I know from my android phone about the apps that can put battery % in the notification area. I was just wondering if Nexus could do it on its own. Guess not. Thanks.

I use Avast mobile security app on all my android devices. It is not for virus prevention which is extremely rare in android but because AMS provides a useful firewall, theft protection, and more. These are far more useful than the antivirus part. There are other tools that can do the firewall, etc. but I find Avast convenient for me.
Hope this helps.

On my new nexus 7there is a battery icon on the top right. Is it possible to change that so it shows a number (%) instead? Thanks.

I have not yet rooted my nexus 7. Still reading and picking up my courage to do it. :-) But I recall that when I rooted my android phone it would not root till I uninstalled Avast mobile security app. It's anti theft feature is designed to prevent it. One more cause for difficulty for those who have it installed.
Hope this helps someone.
Question: once rooted, but without flashing a custom rom, can the android update itself or will i need to unroot to get updates?
Thanks

I have a new Nexus 7. Is there a way to make a complete backup (not just data) to my computer before I attempt rooting it? A backup that would be useful to restore if something goes wrong during the rooting? How exactly? I read the piece explaining backups but it seems to be discussing rooted N7s. Thanks.

Real newbie with a 1 day old Nexus 7. Downloaded the Nexus Root toolkit from this site but it does not have the android 4.2.2 I have running on the N7. Using *.*.* and my build # gives me an error: "This feature does not work with the build you selected....." Scared to go any further.
