Here's an informative article about the changes in rooting in android 4.3

Nexus 7 Help / Re: Help with 4.3 update

Mine hung during boot, too, after I tried the update.  I got mine to complete booting after entering recovery and erasing/resetting userdata.  I removed 4.3 a day later, but reinstalled it following this procedure, and rooted it following this one.

And how is it running now?
There have been reports of problems after the update: apps not working because developers have not yet updated, nexus 7 running slower than before, etc. Have you noticed any of these?
Any improvements? Was it worth updating?
Thanks.

Which nexus model did you upgrade?
Were you already rooted?
What exactly did you do to upgrade?

Sounds great.

But he does mention concerns about the "slouch" or slowing down many of us have noticed in the previous nexus 7.

What causes the nexus 7 to slow down after months of use and many installed apps? Is it the loss of available memory, memory corruption, or something else? How can one restore the speed of the nexus when new? Uninstall apps, reflash, or something else?

Root is broken in 4.3?

That can be a bummer. Maybe I should hold off on upgrading when I get the notice.

Nexus 7 Help / Re: No screen shortcut?

That's good to know. I have never un installed and reinstalled because I didn't want to risk losing all my screen setups -  even with Nova's backup. But that will have to be my next step.

Thanks for the help.

Finally, after 2 reboots, the installed missing app appeared in Nova's app list and I could create a home screen shortcut from it.
So things are fine for now, but who knows when this intermittent annoying bug will strike again. I wish the programmer would answer my emails.

I think it may be a memory or capacity bug in nova. I've downloaded and installed several apps from amazon and the shortcut always appears on the home screen in nova. But the last 2 apps I installed have not. And, what is worse, the apps do not even appear in Nova's list of apps so I can't find them to manually create a shortcut!

I have nova prime and in it's settings, add a shortcut is already selected. See image.

I have a lot of apps installed on my nexus so maybe nova can only handle so many?

Previously nova got confused with shortcuts to the screen and then straightened out after an update. At that time, both Apex and adw did  not have the same problem. Only nova.

This time, I rebooted but things remained the same. Then when I switched to adw launcher I was able to find the apps and create shortcuts fine on adw. Then, when I returned to Nova, problem persisted. I emailed the authors several times with no response. Can't find a forum for nova. I'm ready to give up on nova. It is definitely a bug and only happens in nova.

Seems to be another Nova launcher problem. When I switched to adw launcher, the app was available for creating a screen shortcut. Nova seems to have a problem with screen shortcuts as I discovered on other instances.

Nexus 7 Help / No screen shortcut?
« on: July 21, 2013, 06:56:59 AM »
Nexus 7 running android 4.2.2. Nova launcher.

I purchased "piano melody pro" from Amazon's free day app and it works fine. But when the app installed, it didn't create an icon on the home screen (or any other screen) as usually happens when I install an app and yes there is room and no error message.

Also I can't find it in the Nova's list of installed apps to  create a screen shortcut for it. (It does appear in the android /settings and /apps). So the only way I can start it is to go to amazon where it is shown as purchased and open it from there. That is really weird!

Any suggestions? Thanks.

Jeff

Oh darn! Why do we have to have facts to ruin a good argument! ;-)

I too don't believe the reason given for no sdcard. How can saving files to an sd be more complicated than selecting which folder to save to? It's just another storage device! I don't know why Google does not want Nexus users to have an sdcard but complexity is certainly not the real reason.

Here's an honest question: if I wanted to buy an android 7 inch tablet that is at least as good as the Nexus 7 but has an sdcard which tablet should I look at? Thank you for any advice.

Nexus 7 Audio/Video / Mp3 ringtones
« on: July 03, 2013, 09:17:32 PM »
I have some Mp3 files I want to use in my Nexus 7 wifi, (not 3G). I found the folder for notifications and its contents are all ogg files.

Can mp3 files be used as ringtones (in Talkatone)?

Where would I put them so Talkatone can read and use them? Do I need to convert the mp3 files to ogg format first? How?

Thank you.
