Nexus 7 Help / Re: Backups to pc?
« on: April 04, 2013, 06:04:07 AM »
Thanks for the explanations. That helps.

Just to clarify, because I'm new to android:
In the windows world, a file backup is fine for data restore. But a file backup will not restore the OS, which is why an image backup is needed. Are you saying, that is not the case in android and that a simple file backup of the entire sdcard to another device can be used to restore both the android OS and data?

Should the manual copy of the sdcard include the root? Or, in the case of the Nexus, just what is in the sdcard directory/folder?

Nexus 7 Help / Backups to pc?
« on: April 03, 2013, 06:44:26 PM »
I have a rooted nexus 7 and I know how to do a nandroid backup and a Titanium Pro Backup for the apps. But all these would be useless if the tablet is lost or stolen. So, what does one need to copy to a separate computer to be able to restore everything in case of disaster? In the windows world one would make an image backup to an external hdd. But I'm not sure with Android.

I imagine copying the nandroid and Titanium backups should be the minimum (assuming I can find where these files are located in the nexus..... ), but what else should be copied to a different computer? Are the nandroid and Titanium backups alone enough to restore everything or do I need to copy more of the root, sdcard, other folders, etc?

Appreciate advice from the experts.

And of course a simple spreadsheet app would work too.

I have a similar need and discovered a way to do it and this method has more potential than just a separate address book.

An address book is just a form of database. I found a couple of databases on Google play. The one I like is SailForms, a very easy to use customizable flat db. I installed it and found I could import a csv file exported from a Thunderbird address book and SailForms automatically created the necessary fields. VoilĂ ! A separate address book. Don't know if it can be made to dial or connect with an email client which would be an added bonus.

Of course this db app has numerous other possibilities.

Hope this helps the op and maybe others too.

Nexus 7 User Tips / Using USB flash drive

I have a rooted nexus 7 which I can connect to a stick drive using an otg usb cable. Stickmount mounted it everything is cool.

Question: do I need to unmount it before disconnecting things, like you do in the windows world, to avoid damaging the stick?

I've been surfing trying to learn what I can about android. This is very helpful. Thank you.

A comment from someone who has only been in this os for a week: it was not always clear to me when you were in the android device and when you were issuing commands on the PC. I'll have to go over it again. Might be helpful to clearly indicate when you are downloading files (sdk) and issuing commands on the PC or the android device.

Learned a lot. Owe you a beer! Where are you located?

Just wondered if I had missed it. I've only been in android for about a week and exploring in many directions.

I purchased the pro version because I liked it.

I also read somewhere on this forum about jRummy's rom toolbox and tried it too. Seems to include a tool similar to TitaniumBackup plus a whole lot more! Looks like a real keeper.

Be careful with RomTB. Some of its tools can jack up devices if not compatible. I use it basically just to flash recovery and change my bootloader animation.

I'll try and get it finished in the next few days...
did you get the TitaniumBackup pro guide written yet? If so, where do I find it?

Please explain. What do you mean by flash a new recovery? What do you mean I should do and how do I do it?

Thank you.

Good to know. I tried something simpler first and it worked.

Here is what I did, in case it helps someone else.

Assuming that the problem had to do with the launcher settings being corrupted (because everything else was fine), I went to Settings / apps and deleted the "data" for adw launcher, restoring it to default.

Checked that widgets resizing problem was gone - it was.

Then used adw built in backup / Restore to restore its saved settings.

It worked! Everything is back and everything works correctly.

(for newcomers to android like me, this was less stressful than re flashing)

Thanks for the help guys. You're great.

I was afraid that might be the case. Would that mean losing my settings and data?
