Nexus 7 Accessories / Re: Nexus 7 USB Charge & Sync Desktop Dock
« on: July 24, 2012, 09:41:25 AM »
Hope you didn't purchase. The one review states that the USB plug is facing the wrong direction so your N7 would have to face inward for it to even work. I'm waiting for one that works with the pogo pins... soon I hope!!

Ditto on this, I'm waiting for a dock that supports the N7 in Landscape mode and uses Pogo pins for charging and possibly audio and HDMI out.  That'd be the perfect gig for me :)

Something to note, this weekend when I turned on my laptop it hung after the Xubuntu slash screen, and dmesg showed the rule I added in /etc/udev/rules.d/51-android.rules was the culprit. I removed this, rebooted, and all was good.  So at least on Xubuntu 12.04 running XFCE 4.10 this might give you some unexpected results.  I'll do some testing and report back on what I find, but just an FYI for any other Xubuntu users out there.

Also something to note, Xubuntu 12.04 comes with XFCE 4.08, but I upgraded to 4.10 when it was released... and it's not fully supported on Xubuntu 12.04.  That might be the problem, but I won't know for sure until I get into it more.

I like the idea of rooting the device, but for me I just don't see much benefit from doing it, except for maybe enabling UMS.  Plus though the likelihood of bricking it is slim I still don't want to take that chance.

Hi rdjw22 and welcome to the forum.  Also I have to ask, what part of New Mexico are you in?  I used to vacation in NM almost yearly from around 2000 through 2005, staying in Roswell on July 4th (love the Alien festival) then going either to Ruidoso, Taos, or Red River.  Beautiful state...

Nexus 7 Help / Re: online classes
« on: July 24, 2012, 08:36:11 AM »
When I took both my Biology course and College Algebra course last year the online modules depended on both Flash and Shockwave, neither of which are supported by the Nexus 7.   As for the Books it depends on what format they're saved in, but I think the N7 can read pretty much every major eBook format though you might need to download the appropriated app from Google Play to make it work.  What format are your eBooks in or what app do you read them in on your PC?

And back to your online course modules, can you post more info on this?  PM me if you don't want to post it publicly.

Take care --

This is a great step in the right direction, but I'm not sure it'd work for my needs per say.  For video playback Netflix is probably what I'd use most, plus screen mirroring is a must as well which would help when using the N7 to remote desktop into other systems.  But still the Media Link is great to prove that it's at least possible to stream video of some sort to a TV.

My wife took my N7 to work to try it out there, and they approved her to get one! COOL! Everything they do is through Google Docs so this is perfect for her to use while taking notes, updating calendars, checking email, etc.  I wanted her to get the 16 Gig version since her work is footing the bill, but she might be stuck with the 8 Gig if that's all she can order now.

Also I remember back in the day devices supported a variety of expansion slots, whether it be PCMCIA, CF, or others... but there really isn't a current day equivalent that's commonly used.  I wish this were common place again because it allowed companies to add functionality that wasn't stock, for example a 3G/4G modem or even video out could be added easily enough given Google didn't want to take the time to add it.  But anymore devices are all encompassing with no expansion.

So add this to my wish list, some type of common interface for expansion.

I took mine to work last night and left it on standby for 12 hours today. When I checked the battery it had only lost 1% so I think I'm just going to leave it on like I did with my iPad.

I've noticed the same, the battery life on my end has been great, and from the  Battery settings the display seems to be the largest drainer of power.  I keep the brightness set to Auto which seems to work rather well.  Heck I left Google Music playing in my son's room for about 4 hours the other night and it used maybe 15% of the battery.  Not bad for sure.

Thanks for sharing, though I'm not sure how you could do all that without wifi.  But great commercial... is this airing on TV or just online?

Nexus 7 Help / Re: Calibre and Nexus 7

taming,

Thanks for the info on Aldiko... I've been looking for a good eBook app for the N7 that's independent from Kindle, B&N, Google, etc since I do have a fair number of public domain and free eBooks and docs that I'd like to put on my N7.  Also I'll check the earlier versions and watch the support site to see when the N7 is fully supported.

Nexus 7 General Discussion / Re: Do We Have a Problem Here??
« on: July 23, 2012, 08:55:29 AM »
I haven't noticed this, but I don't run any majorly taxing apps either.  Maybe if it's a software glitch they'll fix it in an update.

Update: I found
showing how the N7 can sometimes have dead zones on the screen after waking.   I'll test this tonight after I get home, but is anyone experiencing this?  I haven't noticed it on mine, but just curious.

One of the things I hoped to do from my N7 was making and receiving calls using Google Voice , since I already have a phone number setup through Google that's tied to my DroidX.  Natively it can't be done since Google Voice wants to use POTS to connect, but I found Talkatone which does the trick.

Basically Talkatone is an VoIP app that somehow links to your Google Voice account and allows you to make calls. Unfortuantely on the N7 it doesn't tie into Google Now so you can't say "Call Mom" and have it dial out, but as long as its' running you can dial out or receive calls using your Google Voice phone number.  Also what's weird when I tested is when an incoming call comes in both my cell phone and N7 rang, and whichever one answered first got the call.

There are a few other apps in Google Play that do the same thing, but this has the best reviews and is the only one I tried.  Also it's free, but it does have banner ad's.  I'd gladly pay a few bucks to get rid of them, but thus far the free version is all they have.

So FYI if you want to have full phone capabilities using your N7.
