I finally rooted my N7 and I'm very happy!

Yes, I finally got the courage to root and everything went well except for a little glitch.  I have used the latest Wug Version 1.6.2
What a great program!
My problem was at the end were SU didn't install automatically.  Went to the App. Store and got it from there....
Before rooting, I made backups on the tablet.  All apps were installed again automatically. Google Mail and Calendar had all of my data. There are some things were the app. needs to get my data back in.

Here's my question: I have also made Nexus backups  and transferred them to my external hard drive. If I copy them back to my laptop, can I then just copy or sync them back into the Nexus?

My first suggestion is to make a nandroid backup with TWRP or CWM, depending on your choice of recovery programs, and then experiment with your restoring your backups, knowing that you have a retrievable backup.

This link might help explain what a nandroid backup is and does, I too had no SuperSU app when I rooted my Nexus 4 with the NRT but like you installed it from GP.
Sorry I can't offer any assistance with the pre-root back up options because I've not used them...

I'm sure it was when I rooted my Nexus 7.

Thanks to everybody for their suggestions. 
I guess that my best choice at this point would be to make a Nandroid Backup, even if it the N7 isn't perfect at this time. This is just for an added insurance and then I could experiment with using the backups I made before rooting.

Titanium Backup, backup your apps and their data.
Voodoo OTA RootKeeper, backs up root during an OTA update and then restores root after update.

Add to the above good reasons:
- charge the N7 at the same time connected to USB storage using new kernal elements
- connect to and use USB webcams, software & drivers not connectable unrooted
- connect to and use ethernet adapters not connectable unrooted
- run an alternate operating system (eg linux)
- add, modify or remove basic OS components, preinstalled crapware (custom launchers, Google apps)
