it's a bit slippery. I liked the grippy texture of the first one better. Lighter, thinner and narrower is a slight improvement but not a huge difference. It's still a bit wide for palming in one hand while reading an ebook.

I agree with Babyfacemagee, that reading books is best on a 7" tablet or even smaller. I use a five inch tablet for book reading when I'm away from home. But please, oh please, stop using the term "form factor!"

If you want a bigger tablet, buy an iPad. Best on the market, IMO.

[edit] On second thought, I haven't bought an iPad myself yet, so maybe an open-Android Nexus 9 or 10 would be nice, if it had a great screen like the 7 and was much cheaper than an iPad.

The Lounge: Off Topic Forum / Nexus 9?
« on: September 06, 2012, 10:36:26 PM »
I have to admit the new Kindle Fire HD with a high resolution 8.9" screen for $299 sounds appealing, were it not for the closed system. I wonder what the chances are for a Google Nexus 9 with similar specs and price.  ???

I haven't owned a tablet larger than my Nexus 7 but would like to try one. The latest iPad with its beautiful screen seems awesome but I can't justify spending $450 (refurb) or more to get one. I have too many expensive gadgets already.  :o

Nexus 7 isn't my first tablet but it's my first good one. Even still, when I need to access my bank, type lengthy email, do research, etc., I go straight for my desktop computer. I use the N7 only for consumption of news, ebooks, and a few TV shows on Netflix. I really hate to type on it, so that eliminates a lot of the typical "computer tasks."

Note that since starting this negative thread, jp4miller has not been back to see any responses. Most everyone else seems to think N7 is a great reader device. Text is so sharp and clear, I think only the (much heavier) iPad and various (much smaller) phones could beat it.

Nexus 7 Apps / Re: GPS \ Navigation apps?

Thanks.  I've installed Sygic and NavFree.  I haven't used them yet for any long trip.  Both look good, but Sygic seemed to be sucking up the battery, it was the #2 drain after the display.  Is that normal?
I don't know about Sygic but NavFree in combination with the GPS receiver is a battery killer. Makes sense I guess since it's constantly updating the position of the car. I don't know how this compares to traditional GPS devices but my battery would be dead quickly without being plugged into the car's power source.

You can set a password, open Google Play and press the three dots at the top and select "Settings".
Now select "Set or change pin" and you'll be promoted to enter a PIN, then you'll be promoted to re-type to confirm.
Then tick " Use PIN for purchases" and your set, a factory data reset will wipe these settings.
Awesome. Hopefully the OP will be back to see that.  :)

The information above about thumb drives is actually untrue and misleading, you can use a thumb drive but only if you root your Nexus 7.
The OP stated that she isn't very computer savvy, so the answer was sufficient; you cannot use thumb drives with a Nexus 7. Rooting would not likely be a good idea in her case, or for 90% of the readers of this forum. (IMO)

I've had good success with Navfree USA but I've used it only for longer trips. When I choose to go off course, the app automatically adjusts on the fly and determines a revised route to complete my trip. The only thing I don't like is the several steps it takes to shut up the navigation voice if I don't want to hear it.

The Kindle app, for Amazon Kindle books, is available at the Google Play Store.

You will not be able to use your USB thumb drives with the Nexus 7. I don't know about opening Excel and Word documents. Perhaps there is some app that will do this but I'm not aware of it.

Seems like it would be simple enough for Google to have an option setting to require a password for purchases. That's what Barnes & Noble does on their Nook. If you set that preference, the Nook requires a password for any B&N Store purchase.

Perhaps Google isn't so smart.

Nexus 7 Apps / Re: Next Issue

Did you try the Kindle app on the N7?  It is really beautiful.
Thanks for the tip. I installed it. Than I attempted to get Entertainment Weekly. I found out EW is only available via the EW Amazon App, which like Next Issue, is incompatible with Jelly Bean on the Nexus 7. <sigh>

You can't read Kindle books on a Nook or Nook books on a Kindle. This is nothing new, but not a problem on the Nexus 7, since you can install any app you like for various book formats.

Nexus 7 General Discussion / Re: The Nexus 7 pros/cons
« on: August 11, 2012, 04:43:06 PM »
I'd say the main "pro" of the Nexus 7 is the display. Great display! I've seen an iPad 3 with its retina display only at stores so haven't used one much but I'd say it has very little over the N7. Perhaps with a magnifying glass I could tell a difference.

The only significant "con," in my opinion is that the Nexus 7 isn't smaller than it is. I have no use for the half inch (three quarters top and bottom) border around the display. It would be sooo much easier to handle, and to pocket, if it were that much smaller.

The print editions of Time and EW include a free digital subscription. Unfortunately to view them you need a Nook, a Kindle, an iPad, or the Next Issue app for Android which currently won't run on the Nexus 7. Hopefully, it'll be upgraded soon.
