Nexus 7 General Discussion / Re: Why 7 ??
« on: July 11, 2012, 10:45:35 AM »
Choosing to have the latest and greatest is personal opinion and the depth of your pockets in my opinion, but just a bit of history from HTC and Lenovo tablets can give you an idea of the longevity you can expect and your options. In May of 2011 I purchased the HTC Flyer with N-Trig screen, stylus, palm rejection, and a promise of an upgrade to Honeycomb soon after launch with a $600 + price tag. In October HTC decided that the tablet market was not in the best interest of the company and put my tablet on fire sale at $199 and they sold out quickly. They also offered the ability to root your device if you agreed to a voided warranty. They eventually pushed a Honeycomb upgrade, but later announced that there would be no ICS for the Flyer. Basically in less than a year my device had no upgrade path remaining. Thanks to XDA Developers I now have ICS on my Flyer and it has new life. I purchased a Lenovo TPT in September and recently received my upgrade to ICS, but it is indicated that we will not see Jelly Bean on the TPT. My point is that we are dependant on the supplier for continued support for our devices and to have the latest version of the Android platform, unless we look to the development community. Tablet technology is changing rapidly and we can expect manufacturers to try and keep pace. I think 2 years + is not unrealistic for a tablet, but be prepared to see technology move past you. I had honestly planned to skip the Tegra 3 generation, but the buy in point and the excitement in this forum changed my mind.

Nexus 7 Apps / Re: Non Google Play Store Android apps
« on: July 11, 2012, 06:01:53 AM »
Rooting means that you have unlocked the bootloader, which will give you r/w privileges on the partition that contains the system files. BFM was referring to the Nexus 7 not locking you to one source for apps. For example you will be able to purchase and install apps from the Amazon App Store.

BTW, just enable unknown sources under settings and you will be able to install non-Google Play apps.

The key to Staples and Office Depot adds are limited quantities and select stores. Marketing advertising is one thing, but delivery is another. If Staples and Office Depot actually have stock before your Google Play device ships and you can drive in and buy one, then make sure you have one in hand before you stop payment on your Google Play order.

I have ordered MoKo cases for clients using the TPT and have no complaint about the quality, design, or fit, so I would expect no less for the N7. The case does add some bulk to the tablet, but that has to be weighed against the protection it offers, in the end it comes down to a personal choice.

Welcome to the forum bigboss. The N7 will root with the same procedure used on your Nexus One, where you unlock the bootloader and then push superuser and CWM to the device. After making sure my N7 has no hardware issues, I will root it and install superuser and CWM, and I am like you I want to try Jelly Bean for a while, but eventually I will go to a CyanogenMod ROM.

You will want to go to Settings then Applications and check Unknown Sources to install apps that are non-Google Play Store. Then you will be able to install apps like the Amazon App Store which will allow you to download, install, and control your licenses from the Amazon App Store. Also, Amazon offers a paid app for free every day.

Nexus 7 Help / Re: Nexus 7 Warranty

Yes rooting voids your warranty. But if you need warranty service, it is a simple process to replace CWM with the stock recovery and re-lock the bootloader and you are no longer rooted.

If you are apprehensive about typing in Fastboot and ADB commands, m.sabra is developing a one click root tool at XDA Developers. The developer already has one click tools for the nexus s and galaxy nexus and bases this tool on the same code used for those. Once the Nexus 7 begins shipping the tool will be finalized and the procedure will be as easy as downloading the tool, installing the drivers, clicking on root.exe, and following the prompts. This is the link to the One Click Toolkit at XDA Developers. Look for a guide here once the tool is finished.

Welcome to the forum pduffer. I have a 7" Flyer and a 10.1" TPT and I will have to admit I prefer 7" for portability and convenience. Hope you enjoy your N7.

Drew and edhunter have raised interesting questions. My HTC Flyer and ThinkPad Tablet, which are both WiFi only, can give you location by WiFi, but severely lack in the ability to give you a GPS lock (actually finding one orbiting the Earth). It will be interesting to see if the GPS in the Nexus 7 actually works and then can we turn it off to extend battery life.

Though I'm a tech geek, usually I can wait for the release of something I preorder. Hell, I've never even purchased my iPhones on any of the launch dates, so I do have patience. That being said, for personal reasons, I wish I had it already. I'm going on a cruise for a week, July 16th to July 23rd. I'll be bringing my Kindle Fire, which has all of my books and some cool games and movies, but man it would have been fun to have the Nexus 7 along for the ride with some games optimized for its Tegra 3 chip (especially Dead Trigger). And then the Kindle App for my books and some movies.

Obviously I'm being a greedy little tech geek, but do some of you have reasons why you'd love to have your Nexus 7 right now ?

That is reason enough for me. ;D Scott99 needs his Nexus 7 for a cruise delivered by the 13th for his 16th departure, so IMHO, Google needs to start shipping the 9th of July. So, +1 or +1 and comment if you support Scott99's claim for delivery by the 13th... ;D

Nexus 7 Polls / Re: Do You Plan On Buying The Nexus 7 Tablet?

I went with the 16 gig model. If you decide to root and install CWM for a nandroid backup, the backup is saved to the internal memory which is shown as \sdcard.
