Some people are saying their N7 is fuzzy when it comes to charging. Either that or you are extremely unlucky with tablets. Try turning your N7 off ( after you plug it in). You might also try a hard reset. If those don't work, maybe your third N7 will be a charm (return it). Either the battery or the charger is defective, assuming you are using the charger it came with and are plugging it in to a wall outlet, not a computer USB. Good luck!

Chaikenj, I'm guessing you are using a USB adapter (micro male to standard female) as I haven't seen a mouse that has a micro USB connector (though I am sure it is out there). If so, that USB adapter needs to be OTG, like garryknight mentioned. If it isn't it will not work with anything you connect.

You'll use the first one with the peripherals (keyboard, mouse, etc.) that have a standard male USB.
The second one can be used to hook up to a computer and/or charge.

Sure, I hope the quality is good. I bet these are all from the same manufacturer.

2) Once I own an OTG cable, must my Nexus 7 be rooted/jailbroken in order to access my camera or thumb drive? Drew, if you're reading this, could you let us know if your Nexus 7 is jailbroken?
Thanks so much, everyone! This thread has been super helpful.
No, no jailbreak, no root, just stock N7. Do you think it is the camera launcher I mentioned earlier? I can't think of anything else that would be different.

Adapter arrived this morning and it works!
When I plug it in it brings up Gallery and my camera is one of the albums (squares). I don't know if it matters, but I have a Canon and my app is Camera Launcher for Nexus 7.

Drew, have you managed to transfer photos from a camera to the Nexus 7? I have the necessary USB adapters but I don't see any way to get the Nexus 7 to recognize my camera. I'm thinking the same restrictions against the Nexus 7 accessing thumb drives and flash storage apply here. But please let me know if I'm mistaken, if this task can in fact be accomplished through an unrooted Nexus 7.
I haven't, simply because I am still waiting for my adapter for micro to micro...for now, I transfer camera to laptop and then to N7. I will let you know when I get it, unless someone else responds with their experience.

You can use it as you would any USB except for storage (unless rooted). The main use would probably be transferring info/pics/music to and from a computer

Tegra High Definition...don't know if they can be played on other tabs or best results are on a Tegra tab.

That is good battery life. Knowing the "battery hogs" is the secret.
Glad you got it working.

Just press the "star" in the upper right corner (next to microphone). After that, it will be on your Chrome homepage.

This is strange....my back panel is brown. Looks black, but when I hold it sideways and compare it to the front screen it is definitely brown. I'm in US. Also thought most pics of N7 look brown, oh well.

I think part of it is JB also. Sorry I couldn't help.
You do have 15 mins. to use a paid app. Then you can go back to the screen where you installed the app and get a refund. If you could test it in that time, you might find a keeper!
