Nexus 7 User Tips / Join the TapaTalk 4 Private Beta Testing
« on: May 05, 2013, 01:00:33 PM »
TapaTalk 4 Private Beta

If you have purchased Tapatalk HD from the Play Store Here and have registered as a TapaTalk User with HD (Note this is a different registration than a TapaTalk forum member, but you may elect to use the same email and password that you used as a forum member), then you are eligible to install and activate the private beta. You may also participate if you have VIP status showing in TapaTalk 2.

Download Link

The download link for the private beta can be found Here at the TapaTalk Forum and there is a promised Public Beta due sometime in May.

Information

From the information, that I have seen on the TapaTalk forum TapaTalk 4 will unify the TapaTalk program into one version for phones and tablets running Android 4.0 and above. We do not have any pricing information, at this time, but my guess is that TapaTalk will be a free upgrade from TapaTalk HD and paid from TapaTalk 2. The private beta is far from complete, but it looks very promising and I like the direction that the new version is headed.

Work Around

If you can't wait to get your hands on the beta and don't want to purchase TapaTalk HD to participate, I have seen some users take the route where they purchase HD, registered, and then return it to Google Play within the 15 minute grace period. You would be able to try out the beta, but obviously you would not qualify for the free upgrade, if and when it is made available.

« on: March 01, 2013, 06:42:49 AM »
Tiger Direct has the 32 GB Nexus 7 for $199 US through 03Mar2013 after rebate. There is a $20 instant savings and a $30 mail in rebate. If you see the offer from other sources post a link in this topic. I wonder if we will see additional discounts as Google prepares to release the Nexus 7 - 2.

Nexus 7 User Tips / Guide to Changing Your Custom Recovery or Reinstalling
« on: February 17, 2013, 02:58:57 PM »
If you have rooted and installed a custom recovery like CWM or TWRP an OS upgrade can restore you stock recovery or you may decide to switch between CWM and TWRP. Using this guide will make managing your recovery a simple task.

If you have downloaded "recovery-clockwork-touch-6.0.2.3-grouper.img" hoping to install CWM Touch, you have found that the file does not install from within Android. The ".img" file is actually executed with a fastboot command while connected to your computer and the Nexus 7 in "Fastboot Mode." Knowing this along with the important knowledge that you can change from CWM, TWRP, or Stock Recovery by flashing one recovery over the other makes the procedure a simple one following this guide.

Note we will be using the Google Nexus 7 Toolkit developed by Mark Skippen which also offers a "One Click Root and Recovery install for the Nexus 7". The Toolkit comes in a full featured "Free" version and a "Donate" version that offers easy updates. I personally chose to donate to support development and get easy updates.

Step 1  Download and install the Google_Nexus_7_ToolKit_v4.0.0.exe on your computer from this link. If you are using the same computer that you rooted your Nexus 7 on, the ADB and fastboot drivers will already be installed and if not the toolkit will install them for you.

Step 2  Start the toolkit with your Nexus 7 connected by USB and pick Option 6 from the "Main Menu" and select your choice of recovery (CWM Touch, TWRP, Stock), then type "no" when asked if you are in "Recovery Mode" and your new choice will be flashed over your current Recovery. Note make sure you accept "USB Debugging" on your Nexus 7 when you open the toolkit.

Each recovery has its own benefits, but personally I like the fact that CWM Touch preserves root and your current recovery when applying an OTA Upgrade like 4.2.2.

OTA 4.2.2 Install Guide - Read the Entire Guide Before Starting

If you have waited until the OTA was pushed to your Nexus 7, you have a notification in the notification bar at the top left of your screen or you can go to "Settings" - "About" - "Check for Updates" and you will see the "Notification Screen" shown below and with or without root you are ready to begin the upgrade process.

OTA Notification Screen for 4.2.2

Install 4.2.2 Without Root:

Step 1:  Simply tap "Restart & Install" in the Notification Screen illustrated above and your Nexus will restart and you can watch the upgrade process finalizing with "Optimizing Apps __ of __" - "Starting Apps" - "Finishing Boot"

Note, on finishing boot, you will retain all of your apps and data.

Install 4.2.2 With Root

Procedure when using CWM Recovery Touch 6.0.1.9

Step 1:  Tap "Restart & Install" in the Notification Screen illustrated above to restart your Nexus 7 and start the install process.

Step 2:  After your Nexus restarts in Recovery,Tap "Yes - Install Untrusted Zip" and wait for the upgrade process to finish.

Step 3:  Confirm "Reboot System Now"

Step 4:  The Nexus will reboot into recovery with "CWM Touch 6.0.1.9" and you will need to tap "Yes - Disable Flash Recovery" followed by "Yes - Fix Root (/system/xbin/su)

Step 5:  The Nexus will restart followed by "Optimizing Apps __ of __" then "Starting Apps" and "Finishing Boot" with all apps and data retained.

Procedure when using TWRP Recovery

Note TWRP will not retain root for you, therefore preserve root with Voodoo RootKeeper Also if you are asked if you want to install "Stock Recovery" and you select "Yes" then TWRP will be replaced with the stock Android recovery and you will have to install TWRP again.

Step 1  Download the update file in Zip format from the link below to your Nexus 7 and it will be stored in \sdcard\downloads.

Nexus 7 WiFi 4.2.2 update

Step 2  Go to "Recovery Mode" by using RomManager or GooManager from Google Play or by shutting down the Nexus 7 and then pressing on the center of the volume control rocker and then the power button until you see the Bootloader screen. Then press volume down until you see "Recovery Mode" and then press the power button to select and you will enter TWRP.

Step 3  Tap "Install" in TWRP and navigate to the update zip that you downloaded and stored in \sdcard\downloads and select it to install. Note that "Up A Level" goes back in the file structure.

Step 4:  The Nexus will restart followed by "Optimizing Apps __ of __" then "Starting Apps" and "Finishing Boot" with all apps and data retained.

Step 5:  After the Nexus 7 restarts open RootKeeper and restore root.

Verification: Go to "Settings" - "About" and you can verify 4.2.2 as the following illustration shows:

Notes:

One:  If you are rooted "Make a Nandroid Backup before you start the upgrade"

Two: Make sure you have install VooDoo OTA Root Keeper and preserved root.

Three: Note that if you are using "TWRP" or the "Non-Touch version of CWM" your prompts will differ from this guide and you will need to use "OTA RootKeeper" or "SuperUser SU" settings to preserve root.

Four: If you have removed stock apps, modified build_prop, side loaded apps, or made other system modifications, your update may fail.

This guide will evolve as feedback is provided, so ask for help, if you encounter problems and feel free to offer suggestions to improve the guide.

Tapatalk is offering the Final release of Tapatalk HD for $.99 on the initial release day, 14Jan2013. The post from Tapatalk does not clearly state if the pricing will extend to everyone on the 14th, but it is worth keeping an eye on it. The following is a link to the Tapatalk post.

Nexus 7 User Tips / YouTube History - The Good, The Bad, The Ugly
« on: December 21, 2012, 09:51:50 AM »
Launch the YouTube app on your Nexus 7 and you are signed in with your Google account. Then swipe right on the screen to show your account, channels, and recommendations, then tap your Google account name and you will see your Viewing History, Uploads, Favorites, etc. Tap on History to see the YouTube videos viewed with this account. So you think you are safe because no one has access to your tablet, think again. Sign into your Google Account on a PC at www.google.com and then go to www.youtube.com and the same information is available. This would be a great way to monitor your children's YouTube viewing or a source of problems if you had viewed content that you would prefer that your spouse was not aware of.

Nexus 7 Vs. The Competition / 4th Quarter US Tablet Sales Predictions
« on: December 18, 2012, 03:11:31 PM »

CNN Money published theses predictions for 4th quarter US Tablet sales and I was pleased to see Nexus 7 shown as 12% of the market in the 4th quarter up from nothing in the 3rd quarter. I do agree that the Kindle Fire will out sell the Nexus 7 in the 4th quarter, but I don't think we will 24% vs 12% difference that the poll predicts. What is your opinion?

CES 2013
LAS VEGAS CONVENTION CENTER
JANUARY 8-11, 2013

CSE 2013 or Consumer Electronics Show 2013 will open on 08Jan2013. Some of the proposed products will make it to market and some won't and some will gain market acceptance and some won't. For the Android fans, at CES 2011, we saw the Motorola Xoom, HTC Flyer, HP's tablet, Samsung Galaxy, and if my memory does not fail me, the first mention of a Google Nexus device. Memory failure or not my point is that from the CES, we get a chance to look at what the manufacturers think will drive the market. The success of the manufacturer depends on the acceptance in the consummer market, as evident in the epic failure of HP's tablet venture. So, get ready for 08Jan2013 and we will see what the manufacturers see as the future for Android devices.
